Hong Kong Travel Tips 2023 – HK Reopen!

Hong Kong Travel Tips 2023

Monica Tindall

Hong Kong is a vibrant city that combines the traditions of the East with the modernity of the West. This city is a popular destination for tourists from all around the world. With its bustling streets, delicious food, and unique attractions, it’s no surprise that the reopening of borders and the removal of restrictions has brought renewed interest in Hong Kong as a must-visit destination.

I recently visited for 10 days in March 2023. If you’re planning to travel to Hong Kong, here are some travel tips that might help you make the most of your experience:

Hong Kong Travel Tips 2023

Before You Go!

Know the Weather

Hong Kong has a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cool, dry winters. The best time to visit is autumn (October to December) and spring (March to May) when the weather is mild and comfortable.

Masks – Hong Kong Travel Tips 2023

As of March 1, 2023, masks are no longer required in public in Hong Kong. Apart from areas with susceptible populations, such as aged-care facilities, hospitals and clinics, you can go mask-free in public. Out and about in Hong Kong, I found about half the population wearing masks, more on public transport and crowding shopping malls than outdoors.

Covid Test – Hong Kong Travel Tips

When I travelled in mid-March (things change quickly, so always best to check the government website for the latest updates), travellers were expected to take a RAT or PCR test twenty-four hours before arriving in Hong Kong. The RAT could be self-administered. Just make sure you remember to take a photo of the negative results. It is also suggested that you take a daily self-RAT test for the first five days after arrival and avoid people if you develop Covid-like symptoms. Although that’s what the official information said (I came armed with my negative test results and a few extra tests for good measure), I wasn’t asked to show proof on arrival.

CDB Products Are Illegal

CDB, also known as cannabidiol, and all products containing it are categorised as illegal and illicit drugs within the jurisdiction of Hong Kong. It is strictly prohibited to bring any CDB products into the region.

Getting There

Cathay Pacific is a Hong Kong-based airline that has been operating since 1946. It has a reputation for exceptional service and offers flights to over 70 destinations worldwide, including its home base of Hong Kong. Visit AirlineInformation.com for more insights about Cathay Pacific and its daily flight schedules. The airline has a strong presence in Asia, with a pervasive network throughout China and the rest of East Asia. Its routes to Hong Kong are especially noteworthy, as the airline has established itself as a leading carrier for business and leisure travellers. When I booked for March, there were one to two flights daily. However, frequency is increasing, and there are now three to four flights daily between Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur, mainly running on Airbus A330-300 but also on Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A330-200. Some flights are operated by Malaysia Airlines.

Cathay Pacific Has Several Flights Daily Between Kuala Lumpur & Hong Kong

Cathay Pacific’s business class between Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong offers a comfortable and luxurious experience. First and foremost, business-class seats are designed with comfort in mind. Although guests don’t get their own pod or flatbed on this medium-haul flight, seats are designed to offer privacy divided by a mid-height panel holding a fold-out table, headset and entertainment system control. The spacious area has plenty of storage above and below the seat. Power outlets and USB ports are also available at every seat, so you can keep your devices charged throughout your journey.

Another highlight of Cathay Pacific’s business class seats is the entertainment system. Each seat has a large personal TV screen. The entertainment options are extensive, with a wide range of genres and languages. If you’re a film fan like me, you might like to start watching as soon as you board. The trip between Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong trip is just long enough to squeeze in two movies! I saw The Menu (as a foodie, this had me in hysterics), Banshees of Inisherin (wow, what a script), She Said (eye-opening), and The Inspection (nicely done).

When it comes to dining, Cathay Pacific has recently introduced new culinary delights on their flights, embracing the vibrant flavours of Hong Kong. Passengers can savour local specialties, such as sweet and sour pork and stir-fried Hong Kong-style noodles, showcasing the city’s rich culinary heritage. The airline has collaborated with renowned local restaurants to curate the menus. This initiative aims to celebrate Hong Kong’s unique food culture and give passengers an elevated taste of the city while travelling with Cathay Pacific. Alternatively, you can advance order lighter, healthier options and a range of meals catering to specific dietary preferences, such as gluten-free, vegan, and heart-healthy. The airline also offers an extensive beverage list, which includes wines, spirits, and non-alcoholic drinks.

On my flight from Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific, Business Class passengers were invited to board at their leisure with pre-flight drinks served while waiting for take-off. A glass of Piper-Heidsiek Brut Champagne caught my attention. Fresh pear, apple, and a nuanced nuttiness were immediately apparent in the bouquet, with a hint of citrus woven through. Lively bubbles cleansed and awakened the palate. It’s a great choice before dinner but also paired well with my seared tuna starter.

Regional and Western influences were evident in the choice of main courses. Wok-fried chicken with pickled young ginger, lightly cooked broccoli that was tender to the bite but not overcooked, and steamed jasmine rice was my selection. This dish paired well with a delicious Bordeaux blanc that was medium-bodied and offered bright acidity and a delightful saline finish. Alternatively, passengers could choose beef tenderloin or halibut as their main courses. To conclude, there was a three-cheese platter, seasonal fruit (mango, pineapple, watermelon, kiwi), and ice cream if desired. I switched to a Chateau du Taillan, Haut-Medoc, France, 2012, to pair with the cheese. Initial red fruits were followed by vanilla and hints of caramel. Some fruit notes lingered in the mouth with a subtle touch of licorice. The wine showed smooth tannins, medium-bodied, medium-plus acidity, and a moderate finish.

Preparing airline cuisine presents a unique challenge for chefs and sommeliers. Taste buds change with air pressure and altitude, often making otherwise full-flavoured recipes taste bland. Food can be adjusted with seasoning, but selecting wines that remain enjoyable in flight requires additional expertise. The team has done an excellent job.

Business Class Lounges

One of the highlights of flying business class with Cathay Pacific is access to the airline’s exclusive lounges at Hong Kong International Airport. The Pier (Level 6, Terminal 1 near Gate 65) and The Deck (Level 7, Terminal 1 near Gate 6) are world-class lounges offering a range of amenities, from private cabanas to gourmet dining options. The Pier is a sleek and sophisticated lounge with a serene atmosphere, perfect for travellers looking to unwind before their flight. Meanwhile, The Deck, located near gate 6, offers a more social atmosphere with a lively bar and a variety of seating options. Both lounges provide a comfortable space for passengers to relax and recharge before their flight. However, The Pier, although located further away, is probably a better choice for longer layovers and more food and beverage options.

Both lounges have the Noodle Bar and extensive bar service. The former provides a variety of noodle dishes, including the famous Dan Dan Noodles and Wonton Noodles, while the latter serves non-alcoholic beverages alongside cocktails, beer, spirits and wine. The bubbly is quite good! The Pier provides a wonderfully serene atmosphere at The Teahouse, where guests can enjoy a selection of fine teas and a handful of Chinese snacks. For those craving Italian flavours, the “Little Italy” section serves authentic Italian dishes such as pizza and pasta, complemented by a curated wine list. Furthermore, The Pier has several quiet zones perfect for stretching out and catching a few zzzs between long-haul flights.

On Arrival – Hong Kong Travel Tips

Before arriving at Hong Kong International Airport, passengers on Cathay Pacific flights were provided with arrival cards by the airline staff during the flight. The immigration process at the airport was impressively efficient, characterised by fast and organised procedures. Upon entry, passengers’ photos were recorded, enabling a streamlined departure experience through the E-gate system. Furthermore, face recognition technology was employed at the boarding gates during departure, significantly accelerating the boarding process.

Awesome Airport Hotel Hong Kong

Even if you’re not just transiting in Hong Kong, The Silveri Hong Kong-MGallery is an excellent stay upon arrival. Besides convenience to the airport, it’s also ideal for those wanting to access Air Asia Expo, Citygate Outlets, The Big Buddha and hiking trails on Lantau Island. There are also direct train lines to Hong Kong Disneyland and Central from its doorstep. It’s an incredibly stylish and comfortable hotel with beautiful rooms, exceptional service and top-notch facilities.

Fastest Way to the City

If your hotel does not offer airport transfers, the MTR Hong Kong Airport Express will have you in the city in 24 minutes! It’s straightforward to use, fast and clean. You need to pay in cash or with an Octopus card.

Get an Octopus Card (or not)

The material I read before the trip about getting around Hong Kong all said to get an Octopus card. It’s a rechargeable smart card that can be used on public transportation, at convenience stores, and even in some restaurants. For longer stays, this card makes getting around Hong Kong very convenient. However, if you’re only staying a few days, you might not think the HK$39 cost of the card is worth it if you only use it for a couple of trips. On this stay, the hotels I stayed in provided transfers, and I love to walk, so I only used the MTR twice on the 10-day trip! If you plan on using a lot of public transport, you can purchase a card at the airport on arrival or get ahead of the game and download it on your phone!

Getting Around – Hong Kong Travel Tips

Public transport is excellent in Hong Kong. Note that you cannot pay with a credit card, so you will need cash or the Octopus card mentioned above. When taking the MTR, knowing what exit you’ll need to take is helpful. Central has a LOT of exits. You can walk for kilometres underground, so it’s best to ask someone at your destination which exit you’ll need to take. Also, avoid peak hours at all costs – unless you literally love rubbing shoulders with fellow commuters.

Going on The Star Ferry is an iconic must-do for tourists, offering more than just transportation. For an enhanced experience, it is recommended to pay an additional $2HK to enjoy the upper deck seating.

Walking is easy and pleasant with so many covered walkways and underground routes. However, be prepared with good walking shoes. Even people in business attire in Hong Kong wear sneakers.

Try the Local Cuisine

Hong Kong is known for its delicious food, so be sure to try some local dishes. Dim sum, roast meat, egg tarts, and milk tea are just a few of the must-tries. For a more refined yet vibrant and authentic meal, try the dim sum at Michelin-starred Shang Palace. It’s fantastic. Sing Yin Cantonese Dining is another fine choice. Its upscale setting and first-rate service are supported by high-quality Cantonese cuisine.

But Also…Try the International Cuisine

Hong Kong’s local food is a must-try, but overlooking its diverse international dining scene would be unwise. The city boasts world-class chefs and restaurants offering a wide range of cuisines. From Michelin-starred establishments to hip cafes, Hong Kong caters to all tastes. Its cosmopolitan nature attracts top chefs worldwide, resulting in a fusion of flavours and innovative creations. With glamorous rooftop restaurants and hidden gems in bustling neighbourhoods, the city promises an unforgettable gastronomic experience. Exploring Hong Kong’s exceptional international dining is a must for foodies and travellers alike, making it a culinary capital not to be missed.

Some of our favourites are Mono restaurant (Michelin-starred, Latin American flavours), Zoku (Japanese with Peruvian flare), and Harbourside Grill (a contemporary French steakhouse with incredible views of Victoria Harbour.

Visit the Local Markets

Hong Kong is home to some of the world’s most vibrant markets, including the Temple Street Night Market, the Ladies Market, and the Stanley Market. These are great places to shop for souvenirs, try local street food, and experience the city’s unique culture.

But Also Visit the Malls!

With its tax-free status, Hong Kong boasts highly competitive prices, making it an attractive destination for those seeking a variety of goods. Whether your interests lie in cosmetics, electronics, jewellery, fashion, or toys, Hong Kong guarantees not to disappoint.

Harbour City in Hong Kong is the city’s largest shopping mall, offering over 450 prestigious international brands, luxury boutiques, and trendy fashion labels. With its prime waterfront location in Tsim Sha Tsui, the mall boasts diverse shopping options, dining establishments, and entertainment venues. Its vibrant atmosphere and breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour attract both locals and tourists. Harbour City is not just a shopping paradise but also a must-visit destination for an immersive experience in the dynamic city of Hong Kong.

Take in the Views

Hong Kong is known for its breathtaking views, and there are plenty of places to take in the city’s skyline. The Peak is a popular spot for panoramic views, while Victoria Harbour is a great place to watch the nightly Symphony of Lights show. Both Harbour City and Kowloon-Shangri-La are exceptional locations for views.

Get Out of the City

While Hong Kong is a bustling metropolis, there are also plenty of opportunities to get out of the city and explore nature. The Hong Kong Geopark and the Lantau Island hiking trails are just a couple of examples of the natural beauty found in Hong Kong.

Take Some Time Out at the Spa

City life and a packed travel itinerary can lead to exhaustion, so why not take some time to enjoy world-class spa service? Two of my favourites are Bliss Spa in W Hong Kong and THANN Sanctuary in Harbour City. Bliss Spa provides a luxurious experience with its wide range of treatments, ensuring guests feel pampered and cared for. Additionally, the spa offers breathtaking views, allowing patrons to unwind while enjoying the stunning scenery. On the other hand, THANN Sanctuary is a Thai brand located conveniently in the heart of Harbour City Mall. This sanctuary offers a haven of tranquillity, where visitors can escape the chaos of the city and immerse themselves in a serene ambience. (* THANN Sanctuary Hong Kong is giving The Yum List readers a 20% discount on all treatments using the code KOS2301 until December 31, 2023.) Both spas provide an oasis of calm, inviting individuals to take a break from their busy lives and embrace a moment of self-care and relaxation.
