Miss Manners once said, “There are three possible parts to a date, of which at least two must be offered: entertainment, food, and affection. It is customary to begin a series of dates with a great deal of entertainment, a moderate amount of food, and the merest suggestion of affection. As the amount of affection increases, the entertainment can be reduced proportionately. When the affection IS the entertainment, we no longer call it dating. Under no circumstances can the food be omitted.”
The Yum List can’t guarantee the affection part of the equation, but we can set the scene by giving you ideas for fun entertainment and fabulous food. Here’s the fifth in a series of suggested itineraries for taking your loved one, or someone you’re hoping will soon become your special person, on a Date in Kuala Lumpur:
Date Night – Pressroom Bistro and Gold Class Cinemas, Pavilion

This series is based on actual experiences in Kuala Lumpur but written with a little whimsical embellishment to enhance the date night concept…
Our busy working couple finds time to meet midweek and enjoy the vibrant city’s heartbeat. Separately they walk through our pulsing Pavillion. She indulges a tiny vanity of hair flicking as her reflection twinkles in glistening shop windows. He marches through, awake with anticipation, pushing through the thronging crowd.
He arrives slightly early and commands Cheese and Cold Cuts. He loosens his tie and sighs with pleasure at the first mouthful of light Spanish Red. The platter arrives, just as she does – ready to share. They relish cheese choices as they melt gently in the warm evening air. Slivers of meat, spicy and cured, slip down with ease as glasses clink and smiles nudge cheeks higher.

Tongues loosened by wine, they chatter apace as the elevator lifts them to the Golden Screen Cinemas. As it’s a special night they opt for ‘Gold Class’ where fewer viewers means a more personal show. Wide, comfy recliners mean settling back and relaxing. ‘More wine?’ ‘Go on then!’ Service ensues; with a touch of a button all desires are fulfilled.***See special Valentine’s promotion by GSC below.

The big screen enhances, two hours while away. Now there’s plenty to muse upon as they head down again. Tummies are rumbling and ready for food. So it’s back to the Pressroom to check what looks good. Menu perusing does not last long as eyes connect quick. The Pressroom’s New Josper platters are ‘perfect to share’ So perfection it is then.
From the myriad choices, seafood’s their choice. Curvy clams cluster seductively in the first pretty pan. He winks and bends in, a secret to tell, ‘El Rompe Colchon.’ She quizzes a look, slight furrow of brow. ‘In my home country we call these mattress breakers,’ he completes, with a smile. She turns her eyes to the dish, cheeks pink with a flush, which deepens on tasting the sensual sauce.

Soaked up all the juices, the pan is removed. Replaced by a larger, more colourful dish. Slender potato slices support firm white fish. She blows on her fork to cool the warm flesh, before savouring the firm moistness and flavours within. A mouthful of sweating, slippery potato finishes her off. ‘No more! It’s delicious, but so much!’
The second pan removed, but they’re not finished yet. ‘Shall we?’ he raises his eyebrow, hinting at dessert. She shakes her head with a naughty twinkle, leans in and murmurs ‘Let’s finish on a cocktail instead.’
Her Caramel Kisses are melding tones of pineapple and caramel with a sweet lychee pop for a mouth melting moment. His Sunset Passion, with passion fruit and peaches, and a sharp burst of vodka, ensures the night ends on a note of perfection. It’s a date to remember and a date to repeat.
