Rasa Sentosa
Resort, A Shangri-La Property, Sentosa, Singapore

Parked on
Siloso Beach, Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort faces the South China Sea. Leaf
or water views are guaranteed from almost every room. Lush tropical jungle
engulfs the property and, it is clear to see, nature is paid due respect at
this serene and harmonious property.

One of six of
the oldest trees in Singapore majestically welcomes guests on the verdant boulevard
leading to the hotel lobby. The 128-year old angsana tree is recognised by
Singapore’s National Parks Board as a heritage tree. It is believed that
British soldiers planted the angsana tree in 1885, when they settled at Fort
Siloso during the pre-war period. A tree lightning conductor has been installed
to protect the old tree, vegetation replanted to reinstate its natural habitat,
and there are even security cameras monitoring its safety. This, alongside
other efforts to work with, rather than against the natural
environment, are evident throughout the hotel.

Heritage Tree

Gardens abound and greenery is at your
doorstep at the Rasa Sentosa Resort. Giant trees rim the shoreline and profuse
layers of plants form quiet enclaves and private retreats. Verdurous shelters
are allocated for those choosing to smoke. Putting the smiles on the hearts and
lungs of many guests, the Rasa Sentosa Resort has been a non-smoking property
since extensive renovations in 2010. Ongoing projects to further green the
resort continue. Currently, works are in progress to introduce an area of
floral plants designed to attract birds and butterflies.

Family
friendly, the pool provides hours of entertainment. Slides, fountains and
various forms of play equipment keep the kids cool and engaged, while adults
might choose a dip in the jet bath, cocktail at the swim-up bar or just a laze
in the sun. The natural water swimming pool and outdoor Jacuzzi employs a
particle-physics based water management system. This means instead of using a
barrage of chemicals, as is the case in most pools, Rasa Sentosa Resort is able
to employ a minimal amount of chlorine – only that legally required by the
government authorities. A reduced impact on our earth is the result, but it’s
also of considerable benefit to our bodies. Those with sensitive skin and or
young children will be particularly pleased to emerge from the water irritant
free.

Pool and Beach

A giant
facility for children caters for all age levels, from a playroom for toddlers,
a three story tree house, arts and crafts room to a ridiculously well stocked
video game arcade, the amount of thought gone into making kids happy is
admirable. An activities program runs from early morning to late night,
ensuring kids have a blast and adults are able to find some peace too. And…
it’s not just the fun times that have been given attention to, basic needs are
thought of also with especially designed washroom facilities and even a
kid-sized buffet.

The Kids’ Club

One of the
biggest contributors to our increasingly unmanageable pile of trash on this
earth is the use of disposable plastic water bottles. While Rasa Sentosa Resort
hasn’t fully combatted that problem, they are well on their way to reducing the
amount of plastic bottles disposed of daily. Every room is supplied with two
bottles of water. When refills are needed guests are encouraged to use the
filtered water and ice dispensers located on every floor. Those who carry their
own reusable bottle can skip the use of plastic altogether. Recycle bins too
are speckled around the resort, so that trash not eliminated can at least be
reused.

Gym
Care for our
earth and health of its inhabitants continues in rooms. Guest
amenities are packaged in self-biodegrading boxes printed with soy ink, with
the Plastarch material decomposing within 80 days in the right conditions.
Products used for cleaning rooms and around the resort are eco-friendly
wherever possible.

Every room at
Rasa Sentosa Resort comes with its own private balcony proffering views of the
sea, pool, hills or garden. No matter what direction you’re facing, you can be
assured verdant nature will be bringing you calm. Air-conditioning
automatically shuts down when balcony doors are opened (it will restart when
doors are closed). Ceiling fans have been installed and individual climate
controls hand over decision making of how much or how little energy you
consume. Over 450 newspaper bags daily have been done away with through the
establishment of permanent “Good News” holders by the door of every room.
Various signage allows choice of reusing bed linens, towels and bath robes
again, reducing strain on our limited fresh clean water supply and the amount
of chemicals that go into it.
