Grand Hyatt Singapore, Equally Ideal for Business or Leisure

Expecting immigration and taxi queues, wondering where I can find an ATM and how to track down a cab that takes credit cards, tired and not in a particularly enthusiastic mood to navigate these trivial dilemmas by myself, I exit arrivals at Singapore’s Changi Airport and am greeted with a cheerful “Good evening Ms. Tindall!”

Although I’m not taking a transfer with the Grand Hyatt Singapore, they’ve sent a representative to meet me at the airport (someone from the hotel is permanently stationed there in an attempt to personally greet as many guests as possible). All of my questions are immediately answered and we engage in a rather upbeat conversation as Norfa’ad escorts me through the taxi line and helps me into a cab – I even manage to nab a few laksa and chicken rice recommendations from him on the way. It’s heartwarming to think what a difference small, thoughtful gestures can do to brighten someone’s day. My trip to Singapore is off to a surprisingly joyful start.

This sense of care continues throughout my time at the Grand Hyatt Singapore. From the warm reception at check-in, to cocktails in the club lounge, to the wonderful concierge service staff who reveal their most coveted local eateries (under the premise that I won’t write about them and let the secrets out to the world), I feel well taken care of throughout my stay.

Located on Scott’s Road, just off the main drag of Orchard Road, the Grand Hyatt Singapore is walking distance to excellent shopping, dining, entertainment and public transport, as well as boasting a whole slew of food, beverage and leisure options of their own. They even have a restaurant in the newly launched Singapore Michelin Guide!

The hotel houses 677 guest rooms and suites. I always try to stay in a clubroom with access to lounge benefits, so that I have a place outside of my room to get some writing done, and I also appreciate the ease of knowing some light meals are available to start and end the day.

Brekkie, all day non-alcoholic beverages, light snacks, and evening cocktail hours are some of the most enticing advantages. A quiet space in which to work, access to helpful staff and business services and meeting rooms if desired are others. I’ve yet to visit a Grand Hyatt that didn’t excel in quality and freshness of food and this Singapore experience doesn’t disappoint.

Made to order eggs are supported by a light hot and cold buffet for breakfast. I find delight in the Bircher muesli with generous portions of macadamias, seeds and a colourful topping of ripe red raspberries. Poached eggs with an assortment of crisp fresh veggies such as asparagus spears and a delicious assortment of house made bread get repeat helpings too. Evening sunset hours see a variety of wines, beers and spirits accompanied by what is described as cocktail food, but which in reality could easily make dinner for lighter eaters or those who have had a hearty lunch. The cheese board is rather extraordinary for a club lounge, including some beautiful specimens from different parts of Europe, and many of the dishes change nightly so I don’t eat the same thing on any of the three evenings I’m there.

My Deluxe Club Room, divided into separate living, bedroom and bathroom areas, is a welcome amount of space in Singapore’s tight market for square footage. Older hotels sure do have an advantage over newer ones in the size of the rooms they can offer. Camel brown woods and sculpted armchairs and coffee table contribute a slice of the 70s in style, and the newly refurbished marble bathrooms are crisp and fresh with independent bath, toilet and shower. June Jacobs’ bath products complement the amenities, and the bedding is of superb quality.

Five restaurants fulfil the Hyatt’s philosophy of serving “Food. Thoughtfully sourced. Carefully Served.” Featuring high quality ingredients, many of which come from sustainable sources, the hotel seeks to prepare food that is both nourishing for our bodies and light on our earth. It’s an admirable charge, and a key reason for our fondness of the brand. From poolside barbecues to a Singaporean cuisine showcase, from popular casual dining to a more elegant table for two, and from a martini bar to a nightclub, there’s something just about to tickle everyone’s fancy. Ours, boozy brunches, is indulged in mezza9’s Champagne Brunch.

Although eating is considered the national pastime of many in Singapore, the Grand Hyatt provides recreation alongside food experience too. A lush garden area bordering the pool, spa, tennis courts and studio, provides a green space that I never expected possible in the city centre. Cascading waterfalls drop into ponds, and meandering rock pathways lead guests between facilities. It is without doubt a breath of fresh air and I find myself often resting for a few moments here whenever I can throughout the day.

And that brings me to the spa. The Damai Spa is far from an afterthought for this hotel, it is a dedicated meticulously sculpted facility of relaxation and wellness. Keeping the earth tones and natural themes seen throughout the rest of the hotel, the 11 spa rooms all feature a glass encased rock wall. High-caliber products are provided by Espa, the spa underwear and robes are of superb quality (regular readers know those lesser puffy undies and scratchy dressing gowns are a pet peeve of mine), and the adjustable massage beds are excellent. I’m pampered with a one hour personalized body massage here, and find the therapist, Roz, to be impressively skilled. Her strong hands manage to untwist and ease all tension, and I rate her as one of the most effective masseurs I’ve come across to date.

Superb facilities, excellent dining options, and a wonderfully convenient location – the Grand Hyatt Singapore is a highly deserving choice of stay.
