Festive Season Help from the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur

There’s much joy to be found in the festive season, but at the same time it too can be one of the most stressful periods of the year.

Agendas at work need tying up by the yearend, social engagements are high and, in my family at least, there seems to be extra pressure when all, who usually live apart, are joined in enclosed spaces for extended periods.

Feeding a mob or a few, celebratory meals involve much more labour than the usual get together dinner. Shopping, preparation, cleaning – all too often fall onto the hands of a few only, serving to make this hectic period all the more taxing.

I understand the past romance with having a home cooked meal, but honestly, there are just so many excellent services nowadays that prepare food at a level much higher than my own culinary expertise while maintaining the home cooked feel, that choosing to make it all from scratch at home, is a sign of self-torture in my opinion.

The InterContinental Kuala Lumpur hotel is just up the road from my home, and so for me makes a convenient kitchen to rely upon. This season, for a recent gathering with a large group I tried out their Roasted Whole Traditional Turkey with Sage Chestnut Stuffing (5kg, RM598) with a side of Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Beef Bacon (200g, RM26).

Christmas Turkey

The turkey was a beautiful specimen of a festive roast. Roasted to form a golden casing to moist tender meat, the bird easily fed my 10 guests with additional leftovers for a week. Verdant sprigs of fresh parsley, carved oranges and vibrant cherry tomatoes made colourful adornment and both a cranberry sauce and gravy made delicious companions. The Brussels sprouts were extra tasty with the beef bacon strips, and if I had have thought ahead, a roasted sweet potato dish would have made a lovely accompaniment to the centrepiece.
