Not willing to wait with the crowds for the other popular chicken rice place in Jonker St, Malacca, we jumped in the shorter queue at Hoe Kee Chicken Rice Balls. Lucky to be visiting during the week we didn’t have to wait in the sweltering heat amongst the weekend crowds and got in within ten minutes. Efficient and friendly, the service staff took our order while we were waiting for a table. Happy given a choice of chicken breast or whole chicken, we went with the leaner option, while watching local fellow diners go for the whole chicken (bones, skin and meat). Extremely impressed with service we were shown to a cool table under a fan and our drinks came almost immediately. With a packed restaurant we expected to wait longer than we did so we were surprised when our food came so soon. Our chicken, 10 rice balls, a plate of loose rice and a side of veges came to RM16 – enough for a light meal for two. This is a dish you must try when visiting Malacca to say you’ve had the complete experience. Hoe Kee consists of a number of linked open spaces with the heritage of the area seemingly well preserved through marble top tables, open courtyard and Chinese decorations on the walls.

i keep wondering how come no outlet in KL is successfully selling chicken rice balls. it's such a beloved dish, we imagine it'd be an enduring hit for any restaurant in the klang valley that offered it! 😀
It's kinda of nice though that some things you still have to travel for.
It's usually quite busy here on weekends too. The chicken rice balls are really yummy.
I was quite happy not to be there on the weekend. I hear the crowds can be horrendous.
Had those once – old man on a bicycle selling by the roadside in Kuching in the 70's. Probably dead and gone by now. 🙁 Nice, so very nice. Yet to try Malacca's.

there are lots of chicken rice ball at Melaka..
I went to one shop that has so many ppl and I have to line up under the hot sun..
but then chicken rice is chicken rice lo.. kakakaka..
No lining up for me. Long lines not only mean waiting but probably bad service. No thanks on either count!
Heard so much about chicken rice balls but few of us were kinda disappointed when we first tried during my food blogging trip to Malacca recently. Maybe it was served cold, the rice was hard outside :<

Guess than you don't have the patience to wait for Chop Chung Hwa's Chicken rice ball. But still this is better than the one we have here in KL. Smooth and juicy poached chickens. Yummy!
Too right I have no patience to wait… unless of course there is a refillable glass of wine in hand. 😉
