Western Australia has some of the most spectacular sunsets in the entire world, and Peppermint Grove Beach in Australia’s South West is a prime viewing location. We’re spending a few nights in the Beachfront Penthouse by Peppy Beach Retreats and witness some showstopping performances.

One afternoon, the sky is perfectly clear, with not a single cloud in sight. We watch a crisp, golden circle dip below the horizon like an egg yolk released into a pan. Another evening, speckled cloud cover creates a canvas for colours of every shade, transforming from a yellow-red-orange glow to pinks and purples as the water droplets reflect the sun’s final rays.
It’s not just sunset, though, that is beautiful here. In the morning, the water glistens at the first break of day. As the light intensifies, it illuminates the 50 shades of blue in the ocean, the pristinely fine-grained, white sand contrasting its hue. At night, there are dark skies. Stargazers can view the full Milky Way from here.
If miles and miles of unspoiled beach is not enough for you, consider that there are often pods of dolphins and whales at specific times of year. And, just up the road from the Beachfront Penthouse is the town lookout – a wooden staircase taking you to the highest peak with 360-degree views of the beach, township and hinterland behind it.
However, we don’t even need to leave the Beachfront Penthouse by Peppy Beach Retreats to enjoy the views. The wrap-around windows in the main bedroom, living room and balcony mean we can appreciate the vistas no matter the weather or our energy levels. I wake to the horizon where sea blue meets sky blue and bird song. I sleep to stars twinkling in the night and the sound of waves lapping the shore.
You might think this is from the bedroom of a very exclusive and expensive 5-star hotel, but the reality is that Peppy Beach Retreats are set up for the whole family, and extended members, too.

Made for families, extended families or friends travelling together, the Beachfront Penthouse by Peppy Beach Retreats feels like we’re stepping into a good friend’s home who has left us everything we could possibly need. Washer, dryer, shampoo, bath gel, crockery, cutlery, glassware, cooking utensils, a full-size fridge, microwave, oven, cooktop – it’s all the conveniences you might have in your own home. Tech is top, too, with a huge TV, speakers and high-speed Wi-Fi. There’s a two-car garage and space for two more cars in the driveway.
The penthouse can sleep up to seven, with a master bedroom, double bedroom, bunk bedroom, and even a cosy sleeping nook in the sunroom. Mattresses are comfortable, sheets are cotton, and several pillows allow different sleeping styles. There’s one shared bathroom with a shower, jacuzzi-jet bathtub, and a separate toilet.
The living areas feature a spacious seating and dining room, along with a screened sundeck that can be enclosed with blinds for privacy or left open to embrace the views. My favourite spot in the Beachfront Penthouse by Peppy Beach Retreats is the covered balcony, which seamlessly transitions to a more open area in front of the main bedroom. This setup functions regardless of the weather.
During our stay in early autumn, the open patio feels like a dream from dawn until dusk and even into the evening. Each morning, I sip coffee while admiring the treetops and the diverse birdlife: reed warblers, magpies, seagulls, spotted scrubwrens, robins, and vibrant rainbow lorikeets. From my balcony perch, I catch glimpses of them everywhere—flitting through the treetops to my left, foraging in the scrub below, gliding across the horizon, and even hopping across the corrugated iron roof, accompanied by the melodic carolling of magpies.
As the sunlight shifts throughout the day, the table becomes an ideal workspace, offering the most breathtaking office view imaginable. Evening brings its own magic—wine at sunset and stargazing under the night sky. It’s almost impossible to persuade me to leave this slice of paradise.
