I regret our booking at Skating Goose Farm the moment we walk in.

We’re only here for two nights. I know immediately that I want to stay for much, much longer.

Set in the overlooked jewel of Ferguson Valley, just 90 minutes south of Perth, the stylish off-grid pods are an escape from harried life and instant therapy.

Skating Goose Farm is home to two beautifully appointed off-grid pods, Minnie and Honey. These names pay homage to the land’s former matriarchs, who resided here for nearly 90 years—a tribute that speaks volumes about the new owners’ character. The farm’s name itself evokes a sense of nostalgia. Situated on Gerde Drive, it was inspired by ‘Gertie the Skating Goose,’ a beloved children’s book by Frances Bacon, which the owners fondly remember reading to their eldest child. This blend of heartfelt memories and a catchy title resulted in the birth of Skating Goose Farm.

Tania (affectionately known as Tansy) and Cameron (Cam) McMurtrie operate the farm with gentle care for the land and optimal sustainability practices. Their commitment is evident in the farm’s design and operation: solar panels, rainwater harvesting, insulation, and a strategic north-facing orientation minimise energy consumption. Waste is further reduced through filtered water systems and compostable or reusable packaging. Where possible, the McMurtries source their products from local artisans, fostering a strong community connection. This includes partnering with a local apiarist for honey, an olive oil plantation nearby, a boutique supplier for vegan soaps, and a small-scale wine producer across the highway.

Healing Nature

The pods are set on gentle hills embraced by a canopy of native trees. The air is superbly clean and scented with eucalyptus and wild botanicals, providing natural aromatherapy that steadily infuses the body and soothes the mind. A window wall and verandah frame a living canvas—the thick foliage of gum trees gives way to rolling hills that descend toward a tranquil dam.

As the day unfolds, the light transforms the landscape. Early mornings have an Impressionist glow with warm, golden tones. By midday, the light sharpens into a striking blue with crisp clarity reminiscent of Fauvist boldness. Late afternoon, the sky adopts a moody, Romantic palette, with dark, brooding storm clouds comparable to J.M.W. Turner’s treatment of light. Free of urban glare at night, the skies open to an unobstructed view of the entire Milky Way and beyond. Stargazers will be overjoyed. It’s a place to … be.

Alongside the Aussie bush is an abundance of birdlife. Willie wagtails, western whistlers and kookaburras keep us company throughout the day. On the farm, sheep keep the grass under control, and the occasional kangaroo hops through.

Inside, the pods are welcoming with a modern rustic style, blending contemporary elements and a warm, natural aesthetic. Large glass sliding doors flood the room with light and connect the indoors with the lush outdoors, creating a coherent relationship between the space and nature. The muted colour palette ensures a calming atmosphere, while small details like a woven basket and weathered timber mantelpiece add to the room’s rustic charm. It feels open and airy despite the relatively small size. Predominantly white walls, mirrors and pale floors reflect light and create a sense of spaciousness. It’s an inviting interior that feels both modern and timeless.

High-quality bedding is complemented by cotton sheets and three different types of pillows (no need for a pillow menu when they’re all already on your bed!). Both air conditioning and gas heating allow for greater temperature control, but the orientation and insulation of the pods mean they are at a comfortable temperature for most of the day. It’s autumn during our visit, and I happily sleep with the doors wide open and fly screens closed. It’s dreamy weather for a sound night of rest.

The couch is equally comfortable, as proven by some deep afternoon naps. Original artworks featuring bush flora add a touch of elegance to the living spaces. High-speed Wi-Fi keeps us connected, while a curated selection of books, board games, and a 500-piece puzzle ensures plenty to do offline.

The kitchen is well-equipped with modern appliances like a microwave, induction top, toaster, and kettle. Alternatively, a gas barbecue invites afternoon grilling sessions on the deck. We also find all the necessary utensils and pantry staples such as salt, pepper, local olive oil (so good), and balsamic vinegar. A welcome hamper features sourdough baked by Tansy’s 77-year-old mum, homemade fig jam, local honey (the real deal from the hives behind our pod!), artisanal muesli, and compostable coffee pods from the Margaret River Roasting Company. A bouquet of roses on the kitchen table reminds me of my childhood and how nature was intertwined with all aspects of living.

Skating Goose Farm redefines compact luxury in the bathroom. Far from confined quarters, the space has an enclosed private toilet, a chic basin with shelving, a large shower with rain and handheld heads, and a full-size bathtub. Automated blinds give the freedom to bring in natural light and scenic views—or to shut them out and claim privacy.

The most magnificent start to my day is with a soak in the tub paired with a Blue Moon Soapery natural bath bomb. Add a favourite book, a steaming cup of coffee, and the invigorating scent of wild lemon myrtle essential oils, and this morning ritual leaves me soft and renewed.

Natural vegan products in compostable packaging, a plastic-free shampoo and conditioning bar, and biodegradable make-up removal wipes are further zero-waste efforts. The thoughtful inclusion of a dark make-up towel, mud towel at the entrance, and quality Sheridan bath towels combine practicality with grandeur.

Ferguson Valley

If you can tear yourself away from the beauty of the pod, Ferguson Valley itself is an undiscovered treasure. While it maintains a peaceful, secluded atmosphere, it’s far from lacking in attractions. Nearby is a bounty of renowned wineries, where local vintage tastings are an art form. Family-run cafes and restaurants dot the landscape, offering delicious meals crafted from fresh, regional produce. For those seeking outdoor adventures, the valley boasts well-marked walking trails, such as Wellington National Park with its stunning dam (you must check out the giant mural) and hiking opportunities. Then there’s the quirky Gnomesville, a whimsical spectacle where thousands of garden gnomes have been gathered, creating an eccentric and ever-growing community.

Skating Goose Farm Review

Whether choosing to stay in or explore, my only regret about Skating Goose Farm is not having a longer booking. I feel so much at peace in this idyllic natural setting where simplicity meets style and sustainability. I feel recalibrated, a gentle reminder of the restorative power of nature and thoughtful design. Leaving feels like stepping out of a dream, one I’m already longing to return to.

Reasons to stay at Skating Goose Farm: gorgeous natural location; only 90-minute drive from Peth; perfect for discovering the relatively unknown gem of the Ferguson Valley; a model example of sustainable luxury; an incredible stay for when you need to disconnect from the busy-ness of life in the city and fully recharge.
