One of Margaret River’s newest openings, Miss Chow’s, overlooks the undulating vineyards of Edwards Wines through tall glass walls. Huge gums frame the vines, and a meticulously manicured lawn sets the foreground. It’s an excellent setting for a long, leisurely lunch, the kind the region is celebrated for.

Miss Chow’s Menu

The menu at Miss Chow’s is ideal for sharing, so come with friends and an appetite and settle in to try several courses for the full experience.

Small Plates

We’re off to a fantastic start with Kingfish Ceviche (AUD 29). The beautiful Aussie yellowtail from pristine waters is tender yet meaty. The smooth flesh glides in our mouths, enhanced by yuzu and soy emulsion, chive oil, and a thread of heat thanks to house-pickled chilli. Delicious!

The first sip of Edwards Wines 2024 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Margaret River (AUD 14), has us in imagined scenes of lawn chairs, friends and flourishing summer scenery. The citrus and passionfruit nose is followed by more fruit in the mouth and subtle creaminess. It’s an excellent mate to our ceviche, balmy afternoons and good company.

From a farm just up the road, the Margaret River Venison Tataki (AUD 32) is layered in thin strips along a rectangular plate. Soy, scallion oil, and garlic chips add complexity to the profile. The meat has just the right amount of chew before dissipating on the tongue, and the common Asian condiments show us that we are better together.

Edwards Wines 2024 Shiraz Grenache Rosé, Margaret River/Frankland River (AUD 14) is a pale rose with plenty of berries both on the nose and in the mouth. It’s light and crisp, ending with a faint savoury appeal.

Dumplings

Showing off the skill of the fold, the WA Rock Lobster Siu Mai (AUD 30) let us know there’s a serious dumpling maker in the house. These little parcels are packed with crustacean and gently elevated with wattle seed and salmon roe.

Pan-seared Patagonian Toothfish (AUD 59) from Glacier 51 has quite the story! Living in the frigid, volcanic depths surrounding Glacier 51, this fish has adapted to an extreme environment, resulting in a sweet, delicate flesh. Snow-white, it’s rich in Omega-3s with a buttery texture, sometimes referred to as the “Kobe beef of the Sea.” The isolated home and treacherous waters make it risky business for fishers to retrieve. It’s marinated in a sweet miso made famous by legendary Japanese-Peruvian chef Nobu in the 80s. Charred broccolini, fingerling potatoes and chilli threads balance the dish.

Edwards Wines 2021 Matilda Chardonnay, Margaret River (AUD 14) provides a typical taste of the region with a balance of citrus acidity and oak influence. Pear, lemon, melon and macadamia inform both the nose and the palate, tampering out to a moderate finish. It’s lovely with the deep seafood flavours of the siu mai dumplings and complements the miso marination of the toothfish.

The Xinjiang Lamb Cutlets (AUD 49) from Amelia Park (also just up the road) are superbly tender and juicy. They’re gently seasoned with Chinese 7-spice and a tasty mint vinaigrette. A tangle of greens countervails the lamb’s richness with leafy freshness. The best way to end this dish is by picking up the thin bone and treating it like a lollipop, gnawing off the last bits of charred goodness. Don’t worry; no one will judge you, and if they do, they’re just envious that they didn’t do the same.

We end our wine pairing with the iconic Margaret River grape with Edwards Wines 2022, Cabernet Sauvignon (AUD 17). It’s what you’d expect of the grape with dark fruits like cherry and blackcurrant, a hint of spice in the bouquet, structured tannins and a reasonably lengthy finish.

Sides

Just like any good Asian meal, we end with rice, ensuring no one leaves the table hungry. It’s a generous bowl of Black Truffle & Prawn Fried Rice (AUD 34). Surprising edamame beans give some texture, shiitake mushrooms some earthiness and a must-have egg is mixed in. Three juicy prawns dress up the crown. The rice grains are separate, each absorbing an elegant truffle quality.

Desserts

We’re curious to find a little of our Malaysian home, pandan, in the Pandan Miso Cheesecake (AUD 18). The Basque-style dessert is memorable with its green hue, a dob of berry jam and a tower of whipped cream.

We could happily end our visit here, but there is much more to explore at Edward’s Wines. In fact, you might choose to ditch dessert altogether and instead head next door to the tasting room.

Edwards Wines Margaret River

Edward’s Wines is celebrated for its artisanal wines and storied heritage. Its founder, Brian Edwards, made his mark by piloting a vintage 1943 Tiger Moth from England to Australia. This adventurous spirit continues to inspire the winery’s ethos. The vineyard spans 22 hectares and features organically cultivated grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Son of Brian, Christopher Edwards (known by all as Christo), has been the viticulturist for the past 30 years and, together with winemaker Jonathan Mettam, carefully combines traditional and modern techniques to create wines that embody the essence of the region. In the tasting room, we find Fiona Edwards (Christo’s wife), who passionately and eloquently takes us through a pairing.

Wine & Chocolate Pairing

With so many quality offerings in Margaret River, it’s essential to tell a unique story, which Edward’s Wines clearly does with the epic plane expeditition. That also extends to the tasting room, where your usual wine flights and cheese pairings are available, alongside a unique chocolate and wine pairing.

Each wine and chocolate match is AUD 5, so you can choose one or all three! Edwards Wines collaborated with local chocolatier Temper Temper to create several signature flavours designed to complement their collection.

Firstly, we taste Lemon Cheesecake & Cashew White Chocolate with Edwards NV Sparkling. A zip of lemon, touch of raspberry, a little buttery toast and elegant creaminess lead to a long, clean conclusion in this lovely Chardonnay Pinot Noir blend. It’s dangerously good.

We move to milk chocolate with Turkish Delight & Pink Peppercorn and the Matilda Shiraz. This Shiraz spends 14 months in French oak with 10% on American oak giving a whisper of sweetness. Fiona says it’s chocolate, mocha and spice. Superb. We like the peppercorn in the chocolate reflected in the spice of the wine.

Lastly, Cherry & Coconut Milk Chocolate sides with the region’s royal grape, Matilda Cabernet Sauvignon. Fiona says the granite ridge of the vineyards gives the wine an edge. It’s big and bold, with juicy berries and a little olive tapenade. Showing utmost care for the premium label, it’s been hand-picked and aged on oak for 18 months. The cherry and coconut in the chocolate draw out the dark fruits and dusty tannins in the wine.

Turning the experience into a complete day out, we end in Flow Gallery by Russel Ord. The West Australian photographer is known for his intriguing surf and ocean images. The gallery offers a curated selection of limited-edition photographs, combining beloved classics with new compositions that reflect the beauty of the region. The exhibition is enriched by contributions from local artists, making it an inspiring beginning or ending to a day out at Edwards Wines.
