Slow Coffee The Hub SS2
Slow Coffee overlooks a green space in The Hub in SS2. The setting is pleasant with its clean lines, and soft white and pale grey palette. Muted lighting, accents of warm wood, and urban vibes humming from the sound system make for a relaxed and happy mood. It’s a perfect atmosphere for brunch, and that is mostly what we focus on today.
Slow Coffee Menu – Breakfast and Brunch
We have a “Slow” beginning with the house Benedict (RM24). Two plump poached eggs stand out on the top dripping with a soft yellow hollandaise. This is no light start as it’s been pimped with pulled barbecue chicken, wilted kale and sun-dried tomatoes. Two spongy slices of sourdough with a little grain turn the dish into an attractive and hearty open-sandwich.
The Mushroom Omelette (RM21) does well balancing colour and texture on the plate. The smooth yellow egg is broken with a tangle of green watercress and some chunky red semi-dried tomatoes. Mushroom espagnole and caramelized onion form a base layer over sourdough. A drizzling of truffle oil leaves an earthy flavour in the mouth.
Served in the cast iron pot it was baked in, the Baked Eggs with Chorizo (RM26) is attractively plated with three large wedges of focaccia. The homemade tomato marinara sauce is acidic in the finish and dominates the lamb chorizo, onions and peppers. There’s a good char around the edges of the pan, which might be better taken advantage of with the addition of a dash of sugar to the recipe.
Slow Coffee PJ – Mains (from 11 am onwards)
Brunch easily morphs into lunch, and for those looking for something more midday-ish, the Confit Chicken (RM28) is a solid choice. With a crisp exterior, the flavours are trapped inside, making a tasty and moist recipe. It’s simple but done well. Smashed potatoes, grilled red and green peppers and a lyonnaise demi sauce bases the poultry.
Souffle Pancakes
I have been itching to try those fluffy, Japanese style pancakes since they first started trending on Instagram. Today, however, is my official first experience. The Pu’er Souffle Pancakes (RM 18) at Slow Coffee don’t disappoint with their impossibly fluffy posture. Spooning in, they resemble the middle of a soft pavlova. From Japan, “fuwa fuwa” means fluffy fluffy and were traditionally served after weddings to bring good luck. We think we’re of good fortune today as these lovely numbers are also sided with butter crumb, tea granola, vanilla syrup and pu’er gelato.
Drinks
At a place called Slow Coffee, there must be caffeine, right? Usually, they have one blend and one single-origin bean from a local roaster. Today there is only single-origin available, and it would make a great pour-over coffee or cold brew with its acidity and fruity finish.
Reasons to visit Slow Coffee: an attractive and peaceful setting with a lovely outlook over a patch of green; must try the souffle pancakes.
