Straits Club is a lovely breezy colonial house located on the grounds of Temple Tree at Bon Ton, Langkawi. It offers a peaceful respite from the bustling over-water-sported Pantai Cenang. Decked with antique furniture and period memorabilia such as birdcages and tiffin pots, there are a myriad of interesting objects to keep your eyes cheerfully engaged. The patio overlooks the lap pool and shady trees and wall fans cool the area to a pleasant temperature.
Straits Club at Temple Tree is, generally speaking, a fusion style menu where west meets spice. Modern Western options using local ingredients dominate the menu. Presentation is not overly sophisticated, but tasteful all the same. It’s meant to be pleasing to the eye without the pretension. A very decent cocktail list, made with fresh juices where appropriate, and house wine add further refreshment.
Happy Hour from 5:30 – 6:30pm offers special price drinks and is the perfect time to try something from the Nibbles menu. The Nibbles for Two, a type of mezze platter, is of a sprinkling of their specialties. Crispy Pumpkin and Goats Cheese Tortellini – oozing creamy pumpkin in the first bite -, Chicken and Water Chestnut Samosas – meriting an order all on their own – and Moroccan Spiced Lamb Spring Rolls – baked and so packed with juicy meat that it gushes out the other end at every chomp – are the hot items. These are perched alongside a Romesco Dip with a Green Pea and Preserved Lemon Salad and house
made Wholemeal Lebanese Bread. This tray, paired with a glass of house wine or a cocktail, makes a lovely intermission from day to evening. The house white, a sauvignon blanc from New Zealand was served at an ideal temperature and hubby’s Lychee Caipiroska was just as refreshing. During happy hours be sure to wear your insect repellent, but be assured that when the sun goes down, the insects disappear.

The dinner menu is worthy of a special trip too. Offerings are unique and I could only dream of a similar outlet in KL. A small but sufficiently interesting menu will leave you needing some time to weigh up your options or planning a return visit to explore it all. We ordered both from the regular menu and the Specials of the Day blackboard. Off to a sumptuous start we were very pleased with the Marinated Eggplant Salad with Rocket and Cashews in a Roasted Tomato Dressing and the Cannelloni of Lamb with Ras-el Hanout Spices, Baba Ganoush, Preserved Capsicum and Lemon. The mains were just as delectable. The Zatar Seabass with a Tomato Salsa aside a Pumpkin Risotto and Pickled Red Cabbage Salad with Lime Dressing was a huge hit. The Caramelized Beef Short Ribs, Sweet Potato and Roasted Garlic Puree with Preserved Capsicum and Pine Nuts, makes my mouth water just writing about it. Finishing with a Home Made Coconut Sorbet and Apple and Guava Crumble with Cinnamon Custard and Vanilla Ice Cream left our taste buds jumping for joy.
