bars in Nepal

Rodi Bar, Crowne Plaza Kathmandu-Soaltee, Nepal

Especially cosy when it’s cold outside, and very welcoming after a day on the streets, is Rodi Bar, in Crowne Plaza Kathmandu-Soaltee. Topped with brass, edged with soft leather and attended by smiley barmen, the bar is our chosen perch for a pre-dinner drink. There are comfortable couches surrounded by local artworks and a screen showing the latest sports matches too, but we like to chat with the staff and a seat at the bar gets their full attention.

We begin quizzing the staff about what’s special at the Rodi Bar. It seems that we can have whatever we want, “No problem.” “You want this, you want that, we can make what you want,” says our friendly barman with a shake of his head. We’re smiling before we’ve even had our first drink and press further as to what is specifically local.
A cocktail, the Cloudy Shangri-La, at least brandishes a local name. Made with gin, Cointreau and adorned with a slice of lime, it soon becomes a favourite of mine. It has a good bite to it with a sourish, refreshing finish.

Hubby learns that Nepal distills their own rum, so the Khukri XXX Rum, fully matured in oak vats, is quickly ordered. Proudly Nepalese, it has a lovely caramel aroma and is surprisingly smooth in the palate. Smooth enough to enjoy on the rocks, we’re glad we’ve requested no mixers for this one so we can appreciate the mildly sweet flavours and round body.

Vodka comes out next as another local product. Made from potatoes using the traditional Russian method, Ruslan Vodka is triple distilled and a winner of multiple gold medals. Martini is our drink of choice for this spirit, and with the only addition of a green olive and dash of vermouth, we’re able to acknowledge the standard of this beverage.

Dinner calls so we must depart, but vow to return again to muse over tomorrow’s adventures in the congenial atmosphere of Rodi Bar.
Reasons to visit: A great spot to meet with colleagues or friends; cosy location and warm respite from the cool winter air; a good variety of beverages with some local spirits and beers available too.
