Graze, Hilton Kuala Lumpur Hotel

One of the best value hotel restaurants in the city, Graze has proven a roaring success since its opening a few months back. Serving quality modern European cuisine, in a bistro style environment, with panoramic city and park views, it makes an effortless choice for lunch or dinner.

We’d previously been wowed by a lunchtime visit and this dinner date was no different. Thoughtful consideration of detail continued to be evident and, efficient and friendly service was consistent with our prior experience.

Details
The small things add up to the overall impression and it’s these trivialities that Graze seems to take pride in. Potted herbs on the tables and, a splendid warm anchovy dip for freshly baked ciabatta bread and crisp crudités, demonstrate some of the thought gone into making a great start.

A bit of bubbly, Moet Chandon Brut Imperial Epernay (RM355 bottle, RM69 glass), further boosted our beginning and set the meal off with smiles and joviality.

Appetizers
The menu is short but we love that about a restaurant. A pet peeve for both hubby and I is when places try to do too much! We’d much prefer a smaller number of items with a guarantee that everything is done very well. We’re all over quality rather than quantity.

Hubby went with a classic Graze Caesar Salad (RM28). Deep fried anchovies (not the overly salty kind but the tamer smoother variety) and beef bacon added another layer of crispiness to the crunchy lettuce leaves. Grated Parmesan was not essential but the extra shavings mixed well with the creamy dressing.

Grilled Quail with Warm Apricot Salad (RM32) was new to the menu since our last visit. The petite bird was so soft and toothsome that I had to force hubby’s hand to put the second leg back on my plate after he’d quickly pulled the first one through his teeth. The luscious stone fruit and oil from the poultry made a rich dressing, which would have caused any non-vegetarian to chow down all of their greens.

The size of the starters might suffice for a light lunch for some appetites.

Soups
Minestrone Soup (RM18) – wholesome, full of finely chopped vegetables, rich tomato flavour, comfort food at its best – but… you’ll have to take hubby’s word for that. His broth cooled a little faster than mine and he had lapped up every last drop before my spoon even started to ascend across the table.

This didn’t however hinder his spoon nose-diving through the Gruyere Cheese and Crouton canopy on my Onion Soup (RM18) as he swiftly supped and declared the recipe worth traveling for. The onion was caramelized lusciously, leaving a sweetness in the mouth that kept taste buds salivating for the next spoonful. The concave sides of the serving bowl trapped in the heat causing the cheese to melt, infusing stringy strands in the broth and adding another layer of texture. I might dare to concur with hubby that this is the best onion soup we’ve had in KL.

Benefiting from the chef’s morning market acquisitions, we ordered the special of the day, fish (between RM168 – RM188 depending on size) roasted with a little salt and vegetables.

Both the Plaice and the Sea Bream were baked with lemon, onion, garlic and abundant sprigs of green dill. The butter and lemon balanced each other out with the thin oily coating in the mouth lifted by the tangy citrus. This gentle seesaw of flavours played well with both fish. The Plaice flesh proved soft and fine, and the Sea Bream was a touch flakier and saltier. We liked both, but the more robust texture of the sea bream was more suited to our personal fancy. Tuscany tomatoes, roasted potatoes and baked fennel made delicious sides.

Desserts
House-made Vanilla Gelato was the simple creamy ending hubby desired, and my Peach Parfait with Fresh Peaches (RM18) was just as simple and satisfying.

After indulging in four courses, each of which was generous in portion, we couldn’t fit even another sip in. Be forewarned however that Italian Moka coffee is worth saving a pocket of tummy space for (we remembered our lunch experience a little too late). Partnered with Sicilian Cannoli, it makes a special ending.

  1. The food looks good. I think the portion of the quail and apricot salad is just nice for my lunch. 😀

  2. Hey Monica!

My name is Danial from Lion & Lion, the digital agency. We’re currently working together with AXA AFFIN for a cancer outreach campaign.

I came across your blog and really found it to be a great read! You have a fantastic writing style that’s really personable and fun to read. Your blog has a great aesthetic to it that makes it great to look at, not just read. I loved reading about restaurants around the Damansara area, like Galerie Du Vin, since it’s actually a place I can get to without having to deal with the crazy city traffic. I just wanted to ask if you’d be interested to help us out by writing a post to help spread cancer awareness and those suffering from it in Malaysia.

AXA AFFIN is working in collaboration with National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) to support cancer patients currently undergoing chemotherapy. They’ll be funding chemotherapy daycare usage for one cancer patient for every blogger that links back to their 110CancerCare website in their efforts to care for cancer patients. Basically, a post from you gets a cancer patient one-day funding for their daycare usage at NCSM Treatment Centre and you’ll be helping them through recovery, both financially and emotionally.
Please drop me a line if you’re interested in lending a hand, or have any questions. You can contact me at [email protected] and/or 013-2851995.

Thanks, I look forward to your reply!
