Always on the hunt for a great cup of coffee we followed some leads to Lighthouse Coffee Penang. I don’t know how we had missed this place on previous trips. It’s tucked into the touristy street of Lebuh Bishop and easy access from most hotels in Georgetown. Maybe, because it is in the tourist strip, is why we hadn’t already visited.

It’s not touristy at all. It’s full of local caffeine addicts. And… this is the place to go if you are serious about your brew.

The café is a side though. Lighthouse Coffee’s principal business is coffee perfection. From advanced barista training, to roasting, to bean seminars to consultation, the guys running Lighthouse Coffee are fastidious in their treatment of the perky bean.

But… back to the café. The drinks menu is extensive and it’s not all caffeinated. There are plenty of options to keep the entire family happy. I’m here to get charged though, so it’s full strength all the way!

Starting with some classics, the Aussie Strong Latte and Cappuccino are faultlessly executed. Temperature is exact. Proportions of milk to espresso are ideal. The froth is rich in texture and leaves a velvety layer of white across the lips. The flavour is balanced. The coffee is smooth and fills the mouth finishing with a subtle bitterness at the end.

Penang’s tropical island heat however might inspire something of a cooler nature. A long list of flavoured ice coffees step up to cool you down. The Lavender Iced Latte is rich with a big blob of fluffy whipped cream on top and a hint of lavender upon swallowing. The Aussie Iced Latte is strong and chilled with a big scoop of ice cream.

For a beverage with a touch of glam however, you can’t go past the Orange Moon. Presented in a martini glass, this cool caffeine treat could only be made better with alcohol. Crowned with plenty of cinnamon sprinkled froth, a cinnamon swivel stick and garnished with a thin slice of orange, it sure does brighten the afternoon.

If you enjoy the coffee (as we did), why not take some home with you? House roasted beans are available as both blends and single origin bags and hover just below RM50 for 250 grams.

There are some home made treats too to balance out the coffee kick. Tiramisu and carrot cake are two home-baked versions made to classic recipes and are satisfying accompaniments for any beverage.
