Literally translated, Brotzeit means “bread time” (snack time) in German.  So it’s ironic that it has taken Brotzeit German Bier Bar and Restaurant several years to add a Bar Bites Menu offering lighter fare for afternoon snacking. “We are testing it here in Malaysia,” says Operations Manager Saravanan Sakadivan. “We know how Malaysians love to eat at any time of day, so instead of only offering our hearty Bavarian entrees, we wanted to offer lighter fare as snacks for our Malaysian clientele.”
We stopped by the Mid Valley Mega Mall outlet last week to sample the new Bar Bites menu, as well as the new dessert offerings and limited-time-only Spargel (white asparagus) menu, all conjured up by Chef Helmut.
We were greeted by a relaxed and cozy atmosphere created with long German-style wooden tables and bench seating, perfect for after work socializing or a respite after a long day of shopping.
Prost!
First thing’s first at Brotzeit, and that means beer! Wanting to sample all four beers on tap but still make it home, we opted for the Paulaner Bier Sampler (RM 29). Don’t expect to find Tiger or Carlsberg here  “We want our customers to experience real German beer when they come to Brotzeit,” explains Sakadivan, “That is why we exclusively serve Paulaner.”

I’ll admit I’m not a huge beer drinker, but all four drafts had the distinction of going down smoothly and I’d order any and all again.
In addition to beer, Brotzeit offers a small but respectable array of white and red wines, as well as two sparkling wines. We tried the Louis Guntrum Reisling which I was particularly taken with. Not too sweet, this was the perfect compliment to our asparagus entrees we would sample later in the evening.

Essen
The new Bar Bites menu at Brotzeit is available between 3pm and 6pm and offers a variety of Bavarian snacks, including the Sausage Duet, Pork Belly Roll and Smoked Salmon Roll, among others.

We dove right in and went for the Mini Brotzeit Platter (RM 29), which was a misnomer. We feasted on German breads, leg of ham, Emmental cheese and more. The cheese and jalepeño spread had a spicy kick that kept me coming back while the apple and bacon spread was fresh and salty goodness. Three of us shared both the platter and the beer sampler and found ourselves aptly satisfied after. But there was so much more to come!

Nachtische
Brotzeit’s lastest dessert offerings are simply wunderbar and worth the stop alone. Chef Helmut’s genius Sweet and Savory Duo (RM 25) combines two things I’m crazy for, bacon and chocolate. Yup, you read that right. Two strips of crispy bacon dipped in Swiss chocolate sit atop a decadent white chocolate mousse. In the middle sits a sweet pile of strawberry slices, drizzled with tangy apricot sauce and then sprinkled with lemon pepper. Sounds weird, tastes terrific!

The Bavarian Orange Trifle (RM 16) was another winner with its combination of sweetness and tang in just the right proportions.  The Profiterole Duet (RM 20) was also quite tasty.

Spargel

For a very limited time, fans of the prized white asparagus can indulge their cravings at Brotzeit with a special menu celebrating the arrival of the “queen of vegetables”. I was impressed with the mild flavor, but less so with the stringy texture. It’s very difficult to keep a fragile vegetable like the asparagus fresh, especially when you have to fly it across the globe for consumption.

Spargel – white asparagus

The real standout from the Spargel menu was the Nurnberger and Scrambled Eggs (RM 69). Though the asparagus covered in a liberal helping of hollandaise was at center stage, the Nurnberger bratwurst stole the show. It’s the same secret Brotzeit recipe used franchise-wide, but the sausage for Malaysia’s outlets is made right here in Malaysia and I was impressed with the juicy but not greasy texture.

Familie
It’s worth mentioning for those with younger kids that Brotzeit offers a kids menu with items like Bavarian Mac and Cheese. Better still, with every adult meal ordered, your child (8 years and younger) can choose a child’s meal for free!
Reason to Go: A nice after work or post-shopping hangout, offering authentic German beers and Bavarian cuisine with great desserts in a relaxed atmosphere.

  1. I used to work with Germans, but why haven't I taught this vocab even tho I was snacking all the time in the office? Lol! I can't say much about beer as I don't enjoy the bitter taste, but the white asparagus look fab!

  2. Still can't get that picture of the salmon and white asparagus out my mind!
