Tapas and Cocktails at One Six Five, InterContinental
Kuala Lumpur

‘the exclusive address to meet and
entertain’

White Hot Chocolate
The lobby lounge of the InterContinental
Kuala Lumpur recently underwent a makeover. The resulting beauty queen is the
stylish and contemporary, yet warm and welcoming, One Six Five. Featuring
discreet seating enhanced by super sized lounges and carefully arranged tables
and, also more social areas with views of the lush garden and flowing cascades,
an intimate reunion or a friendly soiree can both be catered for. Boasting a live
pianist during afternoon tea and nightly jazz, this city centre address is the
place to be.
Alongside the physical
renovation came a remodeling of the menu too. Chef Darrell J. O’Neill has
revamped the offerings with a twist on traditional tapas and the in-house
barmen (assistant F&B Director with a passion for mixing) has upscaled the
drinks menu by fine tuning a list of Classic Cocktails and putting a spin on
old faithfuls to engineer some Creative Concoctions.
Classic Cocktails follow the
strict recipe of the originals, while the Creative Concoctions show influences
from the bartender’s travels and locally inspired flair. Being the lushes that
we are, we boldly set out to try as many cocktails as our stomachs would allow (all
in the name of good reviewing).

Left Hook and Lychee Mojito
The Master’s Flame launched
our introduction. Made with Absolut citron vodka, ginger syrup, coriander, red
chili and lime juice, this blend could certainly be ordered more than once.
Combining British and Asian ingredients in the form of Early Grey tea, gin and
lychee, the Stately Romance unites all parts seamlessly making a mouthful of
one flavour rather than tasting separate elements. The Feijoa Fizz, making use
of 42 Below Feijoa Vodka, Belvoir elderflower cordial and sparkling wine, was
to hubby’s liking as was the sweet Left Hook featuring Bacardi Gold Dark Rum,
lychee liqueur, pineapple juice, grapefruit juice, lime juice and grenadine.
Now, my preferred cocktail
is of a tougher nature and not for the uninitiated. Made simply, an
incorruptible marriage of one part Sweet Vermouth, one part Gin and one part
Campari is poured over ice in an Old Fashioned glass and garnished with a twist
of orange peel. Carpano Antica Vermouth is used at One Six Five and quite
difficult to source – taking up to three months to receive stock once ordered.
But for me, it is the Campari that makes this drink habit forming. The bitter
sensation of the Italian liquor is an acquired taste, much like Vegemite takes
some getting used to. Once bitten though, the spite of the Campari at the rear
of the tongue can quickly turn into an addiction. A pleasant pre dinner drink
or afternoon sip, one round of this strong character is usually enough.
One Six Five, InterContinental, Tapas, Cocktails, stylish bar, lounge, KLCC city centreUsed traditionally as an
aperitif, a Negroni opens your appetite for the inventive tapas menu at One Six
Five. Mini Wagyu Sliders including Gruyere cheese, tomato and red onion relish and
Spanish Meatballs with Manchego mousseline and peperonata salsa might be all
you need. If ordered first, you could easily be tempted to not experiment with
anything else on the menu and instead repeat your order. There are other
noteworthy goodies also though such as the Chicken Yakitori and Mini Lobster
(!) and Mango Tacos. Too tummy space is worth saving for some of the sweeter
items on the menu such as the Warm Chocolate Fingers with Black Sesame Ice Cream
and Tonka Bean Panna Cottta.
The tonka bean has an
interesting history and, Malaysia is one of the few countries that is yet to
place restrictions on its use. Haling from Central and South America it is a
common component used by those who practice magical arts. This fragrant bean is
thought to cure illnesses such as depression and confusion by crushing the bean
and simmering it into a herbal brew.
Other occult traditions claim that the bean can bring you your wishes if
you carry it around until your wish comes true. In many countries however, the
bean is banned, as in highly infused doses it can paralyze the heart! One Six
Five offers the chance to try it (in small doses) before the authorities catch
on. 😉
Prices for tapas range from
RM22 for Mini Thai Crab Cakes to RM45 for Mini Wagyu Sliders. Alternatively you
can order a OneSixFive Tapas Tasting and select any six dishes from the menu to
make your own platter for RM78. All of the cocktails we sampled cost RM34.

The line up of beautiful people dressed in Carven Ong gowns and suits. One Six Five is a classy location for an intimate event.
Not only does
One Six Five provide a stylish ambience for tapas, cocktails, and afternoon tea,
but also it makes an intimate location for events. Recently, Carven Ong
launched a new line of gorgeous gowns at this exact address. The colourful
fabric, fitted bodices and cascading skirts that the designer is known for came
flowing down the grand staircase followed by
models parading throughout
the lounge. All the while, guests were comfortably seated on lounges and sofas,
sipping cocktails and nibbling on finger food.
The elegant atmosphere of One Six Five is the perfect set up for
such events.
