Where to Stay, Eat & Spa in Malacca, Malaysia

The historic city of Malacca, only 150km south of Kuala Lumpur and 260km north of Singapore, makes for a culturally enriching, taste bud pleasing and relaxing getaway from the city. Portuguese, Dutch, British, Chinese, Indian and Malay traditions have all left their individual touches creating a potpourri of culture, food, tradition, religion and architecture. Now on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, Malacca transports you back to the 16th century with its shop houses, winding river, sea port and historical landmarks such as Stadthuys the original Dutch Governor’s residence, the Victorian Fountain, St. Paul’s Church and the Porta De Santiago fort. Antiques, a plethora of local food and a lively  weekend night market can be found in Jonker Street, while Heeren Street’s character shines with elaborate facades along the narrow alley. Religion can be found in Jalan Tukang Emas with a church, mosque, Hindu and Buddhist temples all in one street and a river cruise in the evening awards voyagers with twinkling lights and respite from the heat. Although there are more than enough sites and eateries to keep you occupied for a weekend, some of the accommodation options are so appealing that you might just be tempted to stay in.

Casa del Rio – Hip, fun and really a home by the river, Casa del Rio offers an unforgettable experience. With excellent F&B outlets, spa, gym, rooftop infinity pool and a central location offering both convenience and awesome views you just might not leave this hotel.

The Sterling – A newbie on the boutique hotel block, The Sterling has a Singapore Raffles like exterior, and a classy modern interior. In the first phase of development facilities are limited to a bar and a restaurant, but book the Brighton Room for your own private garden patio and jacuzzi!

Where to Eat

The Mansion – One of a rare few semi fine dining options in Malacca. A chance to try delicious fusion and Peranakan dishes from a hygienic kitchen in cool classy comfort.

Bar Rio – Thin crust pizzas served on hot stone plates with fabulous river views.

River Cafe – Steamboat by the riverside.

River Grill – Casual dining highlighting everything that quality grill can be. Don’t miss the tomahawk wagyu beef bone-in rib eye steak!

Hoe Kee – Classic chicken rice balls – a must try when in Malacca

The Loft & The Balcony -Sunset and roofscape views

Pak Putra – According to Trip Advisor the number one local eatery in town – tandoori mmm.

Calanthe Art Cafe – Coffee from 13 states of Malaysia, innovative menu and an artsy setting.

Where to Spa

The Spa Village, The Majestic Malacca – Celebrating local culture, Peranakan traditions have been infused into the treatments at this world class spa creating an experience like no other. All guests are pampered with a complimentary hair washing ritual before their service. Staff are extremely professional and well trained. A heavenly experience.

Satkara Spa, Casa del Rio – Only three treatment rooms means you will have to book in advance to enjoy treatments in this space. A small welcoming environment with attention to detail that Casa del Rio does so well. A limited number of packages, but expert staff to perform them. Look out for off peak rates to grab a deal.
