Little Collins, Cakery and Café, Online Cake Orders and Delivery, KL

Frances Voon, Cake Designer, Little Collins Cakery and Cafe

What do you do and how did you get into the industry?

I guess I consider myself an entrepreneur. Right now in my life, I’ve found my “calling” as a cake designer. I’m a classic case of the “accidental baker” as I’m actually trained as a graphic designer and I had no former interest in baking/cakes. I worked in advertising as a junior art director for four and a half years before being retrenched. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs and with their support, I’ve previously run a florist, bakery, cafe and now a “cakery” which specializes in custom made cakes. I believe I gather all my experiences in life, travel and work into Little Collins Cakery & Cafe.

Share with us an interesting story from behind the scenes.

Our “behind the scenes” are usually crazy and hilarious at the same time as we strive to turn sugar into edible art, eating all the mishaps along the way! You wouldn’t think that a cake decorator has a tool box filled with wires for sugar flowers, pliers, straws, wooden dowels and everything needed for carpentry!

What’s the best part of your job?

Imparting my experience to younger cake artists/bakers. A job is what you get paid for but a dream is worth living for. We often forget the “heart” behind the business because if it’s all about the dollars, we’ve lost the point. I also love seeing customers enjoy our creations whether a simple cupcake or their wedding cake.

What’s your favorite meal and dessert in Little Collins?

I love our Banana French Toast! We bake our breads in-house and it’s just the perfect combo. And nothing satisfies me more than having a slice of our Butter Cake.

What’s one of the wildest things you’ve seen behind the scenes?

Delivering a cake to a Baymax party and walked into the hall where they had a 20 foot Baymax full figure balloon blown up as a backdrop! It was so awesome! I didn’t want to leave!

The perfect day off would be…

… waking up late, french toast for brunch with raspberry jam and spending the day with family.

A day in the life of a cake decorator  is…

… solving the world’s problems one spoonful of sugar at a time!

What do you do for fun?

Watch movies and eat (I’m Malaysian!).

What’s something you’d like guests to know about Little Collins?

The cakes are home baked. We have a small team of decorators piping, baking, decorating to churn out custom made cakes and now we’ve got a new website up (www.littlecollinskl.com).

What’s your favourite food?

My mum’s spaghetti bolognese

What’s your view on the cake scene in KL?

There’s been an increase in the number of home grown cake companies and designers in Malaysia. Malaysians take their cake seriously! We’ve glammed up from the days of piping gel cartoon cakes to having some of the best cake designers in the world. The interest in this industry has mushroomed and it’s a great thing to be a part of.

What’s in store for you in the upcoming months?

We have recently launched our online store where customers can purchase our ready-to-go cakes and have them delivered to their doorstep. We have party cakes, desserts and a gallery for our customized cakes. In the next few months, we’ll be working on Christmas, New Years, Chinese New year, Valentine’s cakes and desserts. It’s going to be a busy season ahead to say the least!
