Hilton Surfers Paradise Hotel and Residences, Gold Coast

Words and photos: Monica Tindall

The Gold Coast, Queensland, famed for glorious beaches and dynamic hinterlands, theme parks and entertainment, and a burgeoning gourmet scene, is home to Hilton Surfers Paradise Hotel and Residences.

Positioned to take full advantage of the most visited tourist district on the Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise, the relatively new hotel has shops, restaurants and entertainment at its feet and one of Australia’s most celebrated beaches only a five minute walk away.

Newly built two tall slender tower holds 169 guest rooms and suites, and 250 self-contained apartments.

Our King Relaxation Room couldn’t be more appropriately named. With sweeping views of the coastline through adeptly designed floor to ceiling windows, just the sight of all of that fabulous Aussie blue immediately calms the mind. A coffee table and low armchairs provide a flawless spot to sip on a mug of pod coffee and take it all in. Although, the Hilton Serenity Bed with its dreamily soft coverings might be even better (there’s even a pillow menu for personalized head propping).

The corner room, sprawling over 54 sqm houses a separate bathroom with walk in shower, luxurious bathrobe and quality Peter Thomas Roth toiletries. Surfaces of white and glass follow the light bright contemporary theme of the bedroom.

This room comes with access to the Executive Lounge, which I always appreciate. Located on the 15th floor it benefits from similar panoramas as our room. A light breakfast, tea and coffee throughout the day, and antipasto and cocktails in the evening are part of the service.

Although we don’t have time to try out any of the food and beverage outlets, Luke Mangan’s famous Salt Grill makes a home here. Fix Cocktail Bar promises liquid refreshment, and The Food Store prepares quick bites in the form of sandwiches, salads, cakes and pastries. Further sustenance can be found at The Deck with the menu also designed by Luke Mangan, and the bar’s cocktail list is devised by an expert team of mixologists.

The Deck spans a generous 1500 square metres, and with its four pools (the largest 40 metres) it’s a central focal point for the hotel. A dedicated kids’ pool is provisioned with fun equipment, and a play wall and domes are positioned adjacent. While the younger ones are having a blast down one end, adults are being entertained by the plunge pool and bar at the other. In chillier weather, the indoor heated pool and spa and sauna area are popular recreation. Besides the obligatory day beds, a shaded picnic area, grassed pavilions and a podium are set amongst landscaped gardens, with views over the buzzing shopping zone below.

Also on this level is a gym, with another located in the basement with 24-hour access with room card. The around-the-clock access is much appreciated by me, as by the time most gyms open I’ve already worked out, showered and started my day. Although with the coast’s glorious weather, a run along the endless stretches of sandy beaches, or swim in the surf might be a fun alternative.

The Hilton Surfers Paradise is fabulously located for those who want to be in the centre of the action, and the spectacular views of sand and surf are a sound selling point. The recreation facilities are comprehensive, and everything is else is a mere few feet away. All in, it’s a great stay.
