Afternoon Tea, The Lobby Lounge, The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur

A leisurely afternoon tea for me is almost as decadent as an afternoon nap. In this hectic over-scheduled world that I hurtle through, slowing down to luxuriate in time-honoured tradition feels a hedonistic pleasure. Donning a floral frock, sipping tea from china cups and nibbling on dainty sweets and finger sandwiches is only part of the equation. The tangible luxury for me is time itself. Time to slow, breathe, ponder, converse: it’s a magnificent personal indulgence. And, well if I’m going to revel in a few hours of pampering, I’m going to go all out and make it one of the finest in the city: Afternoon Tea at The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur.

Benefiting from recent refurbishments The Lobby Lounge of The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur is brimming with regal appeal. The location, filled with oversized armchairs, shiny surfaces and glittering chandeliers, is abuzz with an unusually high number of staff. They seem to appear when needed and then fade into the backdrop. We’re more than well taken care of here. Musicians supply an upbeat set of classical music, and the lounge is near full with guests.

Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea comes in four pretty tiers of savouries, sandwiches, sweets and scones. A choice of Ronnefeldt teas or coffee accompanies the set. But, in true Yum List style we start with a flute of bubbly.

A Glass of Champagne Makes a Fabulous Start

When it comes to choosing our hot beverage, I ask, “What type of teas do you have?”  The reply is, “Over 40 different types!” The premium tea partner, Ronnedfeldt, certainly caters to all tastes and predilections. From herbal to fruity, from black to fine green and silver teas, there’s enough variety to make us want to return over and over again to try them all. We end up with the Ritz-Carlton Signature blend, which proves a balanced tea, partnering well with both our sweet and savoury bites.

A salmon dip with mini squares of toast is served immediately to ward off any hunger pangs while waiting for our afternoon tea set to arrive.

Trying to fake some semblance to a healthy meal, we all begin with the triangle sandwiches and savouries. Crustless white and wholemeal slices hold tasty salads of chicken, tuna and egg in fresh soft bites. Hot mini-quiches, chicken pies, and a fabulous salted beef and cheese toastie, back up the savouries with hearty warm deliciousness.

Freshly baked scones don’t wait for too long for their turn to be tasted, and a trio of jams and a bowl of clotted cream quickly disappear slathered across their halved tops. The scones (you all know I’m a scone snob by now) pass the test. Although the plain version is much more to my liking than the caramel twist that also joins the plate.

Lastly we take tiny bites of each of the colourful sweets. There is a lot here – more than even a sweet tooth could polish off in a single sitting – but we forge (gorge) our way through. The lemon curd is creamy and tart, the chocolate rich and bitter, the red velvet moist and spongy, and the choux pastry filled with a luscious berry cream. All are good, and we each have our favourites based on preferences for chocolate, cream and fruity tartness.

  1. Did they serve you proper clotted cream freshly imported from Cornwall or Devon? 😉

  2. I don’t know what it is about the Ritz Carlton, (we have it here in Montreal, too), but the design is always very elegant, prestigious and inviting and this place is no different! The afternoon tea would suit me just fine!!! Monica, the furniture in your first photo reminds me of the Titanic, as it seems to be similar to the first class area. Just gorgeous!

  3. I love sandwiches…and pies and tarts, anything savoury but oooooo…scones! My defences all come down! 😀
