The soft scent of White Tea, the signature aroma of Shangri-La hotels greets us before we’ve even stepped inside the property’s grand lobby. This elegant bouquet reflects our entire afternoon tea experience in the Lobby Lounge of this beautiful hotel: graceful, sweet and luxurious.

The Waitstaff Too Dress for the Occasion
April 1 launched the latest mid afternoon decadence for the outlet in the Lobby Lounge’s Golden Birdcage Afternoon Tea. Sold as a set and ideal for two persons (possibly more), the three-tiered arrangement brings sweets, scones and savouries in a fetching exhibition, paired with a mocktail, and tea or coffee as desired.

A Blue Paradise mocktail mirrors a pretty parrot that might sit in the golden birdcage with its multi-coloured feathers of blue, green, yellow and ochre, adorned with a slice of lemon and a Maraschino cherry. It’s icy and refreshing, but definitely one for the sweet tooth.

Blue Paradise Mocktail – Doesn’t it look as if it might sit as pretty as a parrot in the cage?
Gourmet savouries are where we begin, hoping to line our tummies with a little nutrition before we launch into full saccharine decadence. The exhibition of exquisite creations would make anyone still serving cucumber sandwiches fade away into the shadows as the limelight is definitely shining strong and bright on these beauties: Foie Gras Torchon, Pheasant Rillete, Port Wine Jelly and Caramelized Apple; Prawn and Citrus Salad, Manga and Passion Fruit Espuma; Alaskan King Crab, Charcoal and Poppy Seed Baguette, Crisp Pancetta; House Smoked Salmon and Dill Cream Cheese on Rye Bread, Beetroot Chip, Schrenkii Caviar; Parma Ham and Boursin Cheese Roll Sandwich, Semi Dried Tomato and Fine Greens; Truffled Egg Sandwich; Pumpkin and Goat Cheese Mille Feuille, Spinach, Caramelized Onion and Walnut; and Shredded Chicken, Pommery Mayonnaise, Green Pea Puree on Crisp Tortilla. Each and every bite is a piece of artwork in both presentation and taste.

Traditional Scones with Clotted Cream, Strawberry Preserve and Orange Marmalade fill the middle layer, with a few extra cakes thrown in for balance too. Scones are fine examples: light while still maintaining a denseness to them that holds up well to the rich jams and sumptuous velvety cream. The carrot cake, although adorned with a cream cheese-filled veggie look-alike, needs no icing at all as it is one of the moistest we’ve ever come across.

Scones and Cakes
A grandiose third tier contains our sugar allowance for an entire week: Raspberry Panna Cotta, Biscuit Crumble, Orange Foam; Green Tea and Pistachio Opera Cake; Chocolate Mille Feuille; Passion Fruit Mousse; Mango Éclair; Blueberry Cheesecake; Espresso Roulade; Strawberry Tart with Fresh Berries and Meringue Crumble. Again, as with the savouries, each petite bite is a masterpiece in its own right. An incredible attention to detail has gone into the design of every sweet. We note the continued play with the birdcage theme in half ‘egg’ shells bearing yellow and white cream centres, and delight in the expertly engineered balance of flavours.
