Finding a good breakfast spot has been on my to-do list for a while now so when we got the chance to check out LOKL, I jumped at the opportunity.
Smack bang in the middle of the city, chances of me venturing into these parts of town are little to none during the work week, so a Sunday brunch was definitely on the cards to sample the goodies served up at this cute little café.

The cosy atmosphere of this chic spot makes up for the parking issues you may have to face (there’s an open air car park across the street so you can burn some calories) but once you settle into a quiet corner of this cleverly designed diner (it shares a space with the charming BackHome hostel), the extensive breakfast menu will leave you wondering what flavoursome path to go down – sweet or savoury?
Latte (RM10.90)
The glutton in me wanted both, so we ordered up a storm, starting with a cup of strong local coffee or kopi susu (complete with a layer of sweetened condensed milk) and a frothy latte for a more westernised version of a caffeine hit. LOKL, as the name suggests, presents fusion versions of local and Western favourites – although some dishes stick to their origins, with palatable results.
Kopi Susu (RM7.90)
LOKL’s version of the humble pancake is of the thinner variety (I prefer thick and fluffy), but the Gula Melaka syrup and whipped coconut cream it comes served with makes up for the slender serving, by leaps and bounds; uniting to form a giddy, delightful combination. I may even go so far as to say, I may never need maple syrup again. A solid choice, especially if you like crepe-like pancakes.
Fluffy Pancakes (RM15.90)
My personal favourite was the French Toast – complete with Gula Melaka syrup (can you sense a theme here?) and the best caramelized bananas I have ever had. The toast itself was thick, almost brioche-like, with a centre so creamy and eggy, it would probably take about a week to work off the calories gained from every delectable mouthful. Rest assured, it will be well worth your time and money. An outstanding pick, if there ever was one.
French Toast (RM16.90)
The savoury hit was represented by the Omelette with basil and cheese, and it did not disappoint. The omelette itself was huge, providing more than enough for my breakfast date and myself. As self-confessed basil lovers, we had no problem digging into this dish, while the cheese itself went beautifully with the herb flavours.

Besides all these yummy options, I also spied homemade muesli on the menu, and judging by the look of contentment on the face of a fellow diner, this dish is also likely to be a delish choice.
Not quite satisfied with our initial cups of coffee (being the caffeine fiends we are), we opted for a tall glass of Americano (iced – to combat the Malaysian heat), and an energising Passion Fruit Tea, that’s definitely got ‘sweet-toothed lovers’ written all over it.
Iced Americano (RM7.90)
Passion Fruit Iced Lemon Tea (RM9.50)
With most of the breakfast menu clocking in at below RM20, LOKL is a wonderful choice for a quiet cuppa (tea or joe, whichever your preference) and a hearty brekkie meal, in a cosy location.
Reasons to visit: Funky decor, large serving portions and a great breakfast selection
