I came to the Dream Hotel in Sukhumvit purely for convenience as it was round the corner from a conference I was attending. However it proved to be an extremely pleasant surprise for the price, and I felt I simply had to share the experience! From the moment of arrival I’ve been welcomed, helped, and served by an astounding array of smiling gentle people. The hotel style and decor is slightly funky retro-modern. There’s nothing corporate or institutional about this place where I feel uplifted, relaxed, and well … at home.
My room is advertised as single (for a single traveller such a boon) but actually comes with a comfortable double bed, which I am assured is regulation. On entering the room you will find it swathed in relaxing blue light, with all amenities on hand including high speed wifi and a large flat screen television. I’m happy with the blue and white bathroom and comfortable Egyptian cotton sheets.
Room service comes extremely quickly and to a standard well above many more well known hotels I’ve stayed at. The evening I arrive, I enjoy a delicious Tom Kha Ghai, (coconut chicken soup), one of my absolute favourite dishes when it’s done well and this is! Yum. The breakfast buffet is standard hotel fare, with cold cuts, fruit, cereals, a range of pastries and omelette to order. There are, however, a range of Asian choices for guests with particular tastes.
I love the rooftop pool and bar. The pool is a tad small for me, but still possible to stretch out some lengths in it. On Fridays, weather allowing, the pool bar features a live band and relaxed atmosphere. Sounds great! The hotel gym is well equipped and there is a small but delightful onsite spa, which I decide to try. Tempted by a range of options, I eventually plump for the hair spa, which amongst other delights, promises to restore my frazzled locks to a shiny bounce. The delightfully sweet receptionist graciously agrees to replace the body scrub with the herbal compress at my request.

Two and a half hours of pampering, who can complain at that? I admit to falling asleep during the head massage of conditioning treatment (all the products are natural and signature to the Oasis spa group). After a refreshing shower in the large en-suite, which also boasts a spa tub for couples, I return for my hot compress followed by a delightful warm hour aromatherapy massage. Somehow I manage to float towards the Flavia bar and lounge for happy hour cocktails. Every night cocktails are served from 5pm to 8 pm with a different complimentary snack. Tonight it’s hummus with crisped pitta, which makes me very happy, and puts me in an Arabian mood so I order the Dubai Kebab.
Large tender chunks of chicken, delicately spiced, arrive with a mound of cinnamon flavoured rice threaded through with dried fruit. The accompanying side salad is generous and delightfully fresh. It was a good idea to eat though as these cocktails could easily go quickly to my uber relaxed head. I try two, the Sly Thai (vodka with limoncello, muddled lime, lychee and kaffir lime leaf) and the Dream’s signature cocktail, the Blue Dream; vodka with Blue Curacao, lime and apple.
Both are clear, clean and to my particular taste, absolutely delicious. Not a hint of the uber sweet cloyingness, which can be found in many South East Asian bars. Happy and relaxed I head back off to bed. What a great day! I’m so glad I came early, I feel prepared now for four days of heavy learning.
Reasons to visit: charming environment, superb hospitality, extremely good value boutique hotel.
