Jamu Bar, Pangkor
Laut Resort, Malaysia
Our first meal at Pankgor Laut was the perfect introduction
to the relaxing nature of the tropical island resort. Set atop an infinity pool
overlooking the sea, Jamu Bar eased us from the rush of our hectic city life to
the calm of the sea.
A giant wooden gazebo is cooled with ceiling fans and a
draft rising from the running water that falls into the bordering pool. Soft classical tunes add a touch of refinement
and modern table settings provide a contemporary contrast. Jamu Bar is a fine
spot for a casual lunch or dinner, or cocktail by the water. During the day the flies can be quite persistent. Smokey cones help ward off the little critters though and a later meal seems to attract less than an earlier one.
Surrounded by the lush gardens of the Spa Village, Jamu bar
serves a light and wholesome menu of Japanese classics such as noodles,
tempura, sushi and sashimi. Ordering a la carte is not the most economical way
to eat and indeed prices seem to have a ‘serenity and unbeatable vista’ fee
included. However, dining as part of Pangkor Laut Resort’s all-inclusive package is a steal. With
two lunches included in a three day two night package, one of them should be
taken here and the other at Emerald Bay.

Pineapple Blast RM15
Cold sparkling water and, a blend of pineapple, ginger and
lime, the Pineapple Blast, took the heat from our bodies and helped us to settle
into island mode. A one page menu filled with Japanese items made ordering
simple, but still we took the waiter’s recommendation and requested the Pangkor
Deluxe Bento. This popular plate, a selection of sushi, sashimi and maki comes out
in three rounds.
A trio of Sashimi served on a shell shaped plate was the
first platter out. Maguro (tuna), Sake (salmon) and Ebi (prawns) were fresh and
simply decorated with a nest of green noodles, a leaf of lettuce and a dollop
of wasabi.
Next came an array of Nigiri Sushi, rice ovals topped with Sake
(salmon), Saba (mackerel) and Akagai (ark shell). The salmon and mackerel were
soft and to my liking, however it seems the ark shell is more of an acquired
taste with a slightly chewy texture.
Maki Sushi was the third plate. Hand rolled rounds of sushi rice, beef,
cheese and cucumber arrived drizzled with a chili mayonnaise. A subtle contrast
in textures made this dish special with the crunch of fresh cucumber, the
smoosh of the beef and cheese, and the slight stickiness of the rice. The slightly spicy topping was
just enough zing to bring out the flavours of the other ingredients without
overpowering them.
In my opinion, our light lunch was enough to leave me
feeling satisfied but not lethargic. For hubby’s dinosaur appetite however, it
was just an opener, so Kaisen Shiru was his next order. A miso and seafood broth came steaming with
shrimp, salmon, ark shell seaweed and tofu. The salty brew served to fill his
tummy and left him in good spirits speaking of his mouth being filled with the
taste of the Malacca Straits.

Cappuccino
A medium strength cappuccino provided just enough lift
at the end of the meal and I happily ordered another knowing that I would have
no trouble sleeping at night with the serenity of the setting at aide. The wine list is short and affordable
featuring mostly new world wines starting from RM120 a bottle and RM25 per
glass. Surprisingly, for an isolated island resort, the prices are in line with
most restaurants in KL. Freshly squeezed or blended juices are RM15 with no
less than 20 revitalizing concoctions listed.

  1. That sounds delicious and serene. I didn't get to eat there when I visited Pangkor Laut as I had my kids with me and this place is adults only. I had been wondering what it was like, and now I know. Thanks!

  2. Can't afford… This is on that YTL's island, right? Pavarotti sang there, that one?

  3. Living and eating like that everyday would be a dream come true!

  4. The salmon looks fresh! Wish I could be there as well…

  5. Ok that looks top. We just love sushi and with a view like that, what more do you want.

    Greetings,
    Filip

  6. This is expensive, can't afford at this moment 🙁
