The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur

Our
experience at The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur began with a warm
gentle greeting by reception and escort to a pleasant lounge area. Hints of
scented oil stroked the air and soft tunes chimed the background. Our shoes
were removed and replaced with slippers. A choice of hot or cold hand towels
was given along with lemongrass tea with honey. Our therapists soon entered and
introduced themselves by name, dealing out a health questionnaire and then
leaving us again to complete the form and enjoy the refreshments.
We had
booked in for the Mandarin Oriental Signature Spa Therapies which last 1 hour
and 50 minutes. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Aromatherapy is combined to
create treatments based around the five elements of Wood (Awaken), Water
(Reflect), Metal (Release), Earth (Flourish) and Fire (Bloom). A comprehensive
survey and personal consultation with the therapist including a sampling of the
oil options leads to a selection designed to meet your individual needs.
It
turns out that hubby and I both were in need of an Awaken package relating to
the Chinese element of Wood. The aromatherapy oil used in this treatment contains
neroli and lavender claiming to relieve mental tension and, mandarin and grapefruit
for a gentle energy boost.
With
our belongings safely stored, and now changed into our robes, we were led into
separate treatment rooms. Soft lighting and elegantly chic design surrounded
the centerpiece massage bed. Laid out with freshly laundered towels and oils, I
noticed that this bed would fit my length (my feet often hang over the end of
massage beds in Asia due to my foreign height).
Smiling at the bed size, I sat in the cushioned chair ready for the foot
ritual.
Told
to close my eyes and breathe deeply, cymbals were softly struck once to inaugurate
the treatment. A cleansing of my tootsies ensued in a bath bestrew with fresh
flowers and essential oils. A flurry of movements on my lower leg and pressure
points seemed to stimulate blood flow into my usually cold feet and a drying
off with a fluffy towel left me feeling cleansed and ready for the massage.
Laying
face down on the bed I was covered with a towel and made comfortable with a
slight elevation of the feet relieving tension in the lower back.  Throughout the treatment my therapist checked
that the temperature and pressure was to my liking. I don’t know if it was
planned or not but the background music seemed to time the treatment. Long S
strokes up and down the entire length of my back danced to sensual sounds from
the Middle East. As the massage progressed the tunes changed seamlessly from
those of the East to classical piano when my meridian points were firmly
pressed (with warning from the therapist beforehand that it might be painful). Another
single strike of the cymbals reverberated the air tolling the knell of the
session. Robed again, my caretaker gave me a few minutes of advice in the form
of stretching recommendations for the mornings and a suggestion to eat more
vegetables. The combination of Oriental and Western practices culminated in
both a healing and relaxing experience.
The
facilities that come with a spa treatment are worth arriving early or staying
later for. An enormous locker and change room feature luxurious bath products,
electronic key system to secure your belongings and a spacious mirrored area
fully equipped with hair dryers and beauty products to get yourself ready to
face the world again. The showers are a whirl of sprays and temperature
controls. Go for a rain shower, hand held stem or set the jets to spray you
from the sides. A steam room, dry sauna, hot and cold Jacuzzis and a relaxation
lounge with magazines, tea, coffee, fresh fruit and cold ice lemon water are
all at your disposal when visiting the spa for a treatment.
The
Spa at Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur is open from 10am until 10pm daily.
Reservations are highly recommended and I personally suggest allowing some time
before or after your treatment to enjoy their complementary facilities.
Reason to visit: highly trained
therapists, relaxation facilities included in every treatment, luxurious
surrounds
