The Red Beanbag

Searching online for the best breakfasts in Kuala Lumpur,
Red Beanbag popped up more than once. Other bloggers wrote of dreamy eggs and
scrumptious coffee, luscious French toast and a chic Melbournesque ambience. I
found my
own blog post
written back when they had first opened and fondly remembered
a skillfully made flat white. The cyber stars were all navigating towards the
Red Beanbag so we followed.

Arriving, at what we thought a bright and early hour on the
weekend, 10am, we were met with a decent crowd sprouted throughout both the
indoor and outdoor seating. With weekend opening hours starting from 9:30am,
the breakfast brigade had already begun their day.

Things have changed since my last visit. The Red Beanbag is
a bit greener with mobile terraces of pot plants refreshing the air and tables
spilling out onto the first floor balcony. Perched above The Square of Publika,
the café affords a leafy canopy runway for viewing the happenings of the mall’s
artistic centre. The menu has expanded too. A host of mains and some alcoholic
beverages are new additions we look forward to sampling in the future. This
day, however, was all about breakfast.

Fruitful Concoctions by Smooshie perked us up with their
freshly squeezed juices in bottles. An
assortment of uncommon blends of fruits decelerated our tempo in making a
decision on what to order. After much deliberation, the Red Apple plus Dragonfruit
and, the Guava plus Lychee were our final picks. Priced at RM5.50 a glass, we
thought the cost reasonable considering the freshness of the drink and obvious
quality of the fruit.

Taking suggestions from the staff we ordered the three most
popular dishes. (apart from the French toast which I had tried on my first
visit). Eggs Atlantic v2.0 came out first. Poached eggs with a smooth hollandaise
sauce, snappy asparagus, mushrooms and smoked salmon topped two thick
mattresses of fluffy French-toasted bread RM17.90. Lucky for me the portion
furnished two pieces so I was able to claim my share before hubby swiped it all
off the plate. We’re both fans of eggs benedict so this twist on the original
easily won the approval of our taste buds.

Specialty Baked Eggs came next and we could tell just by
breathing in the aroma of the recently toasted cheese that this dish would fill
our calorie banks with a surplus supply.  Eggs are cracked into a baking dish of lamb,
beef and chicken bratwurst mixed with sundried tomatoes, aubergine and potatoes
and, smothered with a cheese blanket before being baked to perfection and served
on a wooden chopping board with crusty bread. (RM17.90) Sinfully delicious, thoughts
of getting a healthy start to the day were put aside as we stuck the first fork
into the pot lifting up the gooey strings of cheese and piercing the egg yolks
to reveal a mush of sausage and potato chunks bathing in a savoury goo of
tomatoes and eggplant. We can see why this is a favourite amongst regulars.

Flat White

Finally the Skyscraper came out as a sweet ending to our
salted beginnings.  A tower of six fluffy
pancakes stood tall beside a bowl of strawberries and caramelized bananas with
a jug of maple syrup just waiting to be poured in a sticky mellifluous torrent
over the stack. (RM14.90). After complete consumption of the two preceding
dishes, the clean plate finale, is testimony in itself that the pancakes were a
hit.

A strong, nutty Bonito blend of coffee beans is sourced from
Rubra in Perth. The resulting bold coffee is much to my liking and we ended our
meal cheerily with a skinny Cappuccino and Flat White. RM8
Breakfast is served from 9:30am on weekends and 10am on
weekdays until 3pm.
