Dinner on the Beach, La Sal, Casa del Mar, Langkawi
Feet in the sand, waves lapping the shore and a fading sun changing the hues of the sky – can you imagine a more idyllic setting for dinner?Β La Sal at Casa del Mar Langkawi is known for its beach dinners. Dining al fresco at water’s edge is an experience unique to the tropics.Β Sure there are gorgeous beaches around the world, but few offer the stillness of air and temperatures to allow such an adventure.
With duty free prices your first order should be a bottle of bubbly or a cocktail.Β Using fresh juices, local herbs, spices and in-house infused liquor, La Sal’s cocktails are creative and high quality. Choose from the classics or inventive twists on Bellinis, Mojitos, Martinis and Caipirinhas. An extensive drink menu will appease anyone’s thirst.
If your tummy allows it, you can create your own three course dinner menu inclusive of tea or coffee by choosing any starter, main and dessert from the menu for RM120. Β After a number of cocktails and a later lunch we thought a starter and a main more than enough and went with our waiter’s recommendations. Rarely is it that we have a dinner where we love everything tried, but on this occasion it was exactly the case.
Deep Fried Kataifi Prawns on Spiced Avocado and Mango Salsa with Cumin Lime Mayo and Crispy Soft Shell Crab with Thai Basil Scented Pomelo Salad, Chili, Lime, Lemongrass and Coriander Dressing got us off to a hopeful start. Both deep fried items were crunchy with not a drop of excess oil evident. The two dishes also were flawlessly balanced with healthier fruit, vegetable and herb sides. The mains only proceeded to sing Amazing Graces. King Prawn and Squid Risotto with Asparagus topped with Seared Scallops and Caramelized Grapefruit Rind was both innovative and traditional. Impeccably cooked rice with the seafood mixture and visionary intricacy of grapefruit gave new dimensions to what can, at times be, a common dish. The Crispy Skin Salmon on Lemon Thyme Polenta, Ratatouille and Mizuna Salad with Capers, Tomato Fondue and Aged Balsamic Reduction gave another expressive insight into the resourcefulness of the master chef. While dining under the stars with sand in your feet is an unforgettable experience, their menu is worthy of a visit, good weather or not. Our delicious finds on a not so great weather night were:Β Pumpkin and Sweet Potato Soup with Sour Cream and Tapenade Toast;Β Tuna Tarta with Langkawi Goats Cheese and Black Truffle Vinaigrette on Cucumber and; theΒ Australian Beef Fillet with Chive Mash, Beans, Watercress, Hollandaise and Shallot Jus.

Breakfasts too are a treat at Casa del Mar. While the hotel manager rang up the praises of the night dinner on the beach, I think he was humbly unaware that their breakfast could equal or top any along the Pantai Cenang strip. With a semi buffet you can select fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurt, home made breads and jams, salads and even whip yourself up a Blood Mary. The main is ordered a la carte with decent egg and pancake choices and some local dishes too. Low fat yoghurt, egg white omelets and plunger or espresso based coffees are sure to please the finicky. Healthy or not, La Sal offers a gourmet breakfast option with views to impress.
