Spice Market Cafe, Rasa Sayang’s all day dining establishment, is an admirable model of celebrating Malaysian culture through food, art, music and education. The entrance is a museum of memorabilia including a rickshaw, tools for grinding spices, an ice shaver and a display of over 100 traditional spices. Showcases are accompanied by information panels explaining each item and, if not, the well trained staff will merrily tell you all about an artefact and the role it has played in the history and life of Malaysians or Penangites in particular. Traditional music performances are a regular feature and a fine job is done of ensuring the many races of this country are represented. Of course food plays a significant role in getting to know the country’s culture and this has not been forgotten.
As with most five star buffets, Spice Market has a mixture of local and international cuisine serving up just about every dish that any picky eater could ever hope to fuss over. And… just to make sure that everyone IS satisfied chefs will do their best to whip up your requests as along as the necessary ingredients are available. As our happy waiter told us over and over again, “Just ask and you shall receive.” For me this meant a spinach and cheese egg white omelette cooked with minimal oil on wholemeal toast, accompanied by natural yoghurt, fresh fruit and granola with strong coffee and low fat milk. For hubby it entailed two sunny side up eggs with mushrooms, tomatoes, sausages, buttery croissants and a number of self-created fresh juice concoctions – personally I think he was trying to push the barriers of molecular science with the number of fruits he asked to be squeezed into one glass – but the juicer (who perhaps was a scientist in a previous career) managed to successfully accomplish every order smiling. For dinner, I often find buffets overwhelming and end up not satisfied because I try to taste everything. Taking a walk on the wild side this time, I tried ordering from our table and only picked a few sides from the buffet bar. This proved extremely successful as the roast duck we ordered (last pic above) was drool worthy – crispy skin encasing tender full flavoured flesh. I’m going to try this option more often – ie thinking about what I feel like eating prior to roaming the buffet and being distracted by an overwhelming assortment of temptations. We both left very happy.
The Shangri-La standard of service, including the ‘can do’ and ‘we are here to please’ attitude sets this buffet apart from many. Top that with beautiful indoor and outdoor settings and the good food just seems to be an added bonus.
