Sea Salt, Beach Restaurant, The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui

Monica Tindall

Nothing speaks island holiday more than a cocktail and casual fare by the pool. Sea Salt at The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui fulfils our vacation cravings with refreshing beverages, international comfort food and service directly to our sun chairs or tables in the shade of old tropical trees.

Cocktails at Sea Salt

Holiday plus beach equals cocktails in our minds, and alcoholic signatures at Sea Salt are offered by the glass or pitcher. They’re designed to be light and refreshing and tropical fruits are a feature. Pisco Punch (THB400) starts with Demonio de Los Andes Pisco, simple syrup and freshly squeezed lime juice, and can be flavoured with pineapple, kaffir lime or peach (actually any fruit that they have in stock such as our passion fruit order). White Sangria (THB400) grabs hubby’s attention with its base of Diplomatico Planas Rum (a charcoal filtered Venezuelan rum). It’s combined with white wine, limoncello, Triple Sec, citrus mix and freshly squeezed lime juice. Both are real thirst-quenchers and we could see a whole pitcher disappearing dangerously quickly.

Appetizers

Market Salad (THB410) is a healthy start with organic greens, cucumber and carrot ribbons, beetroot and spicy pepitas. It’s dressed in a refreshing pink peppercorn and passion fruit vinaigrette.

A trusted source tells us that the Fruit Salad (THB450) is superb. Crumbled feta and toasted coconut are tossed together with a passionfruit vinaigrette over juicy vibrant tropical fruits. The fruits are perfectly ripe and the contrast between sweet, savoury and tangy is addictive.

Pizza

We’ve been told that the pizzas are a must, especially the Tom Yum Goong (THB510) that fuses Italian and Thai recipes together into one lip-smacking, flavour-packed, tongue tingling recipe. Plump tiger prawns from the local sea are seasoned with lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, herbs and, of course, a touch of chilli. A Roman-style thin crust base makes a flawless support.

Burger

We have a Thai street food dinner ahead of us so hubby orders something a little more western with the Turkey Burger (THB 650). A soft white bun is filled with a fat moist poultry patty and complemented with sofrito, avocado salsa and melted cheese. Thin French fries are crisp and together with the burger make a satisfying lunch.

Dessert at Sea Salt

Sitting in our shady spot by the sea, an Ice Cream Sandwich (THB300) sounds perfect. We choose coconut flavoured house-made ice cream hugged by sheets of caramelized puff pastry, which is then rolled in crushed pistachios. This is a far cry from the street-vendor sweet snack I had in my mind. But, this is The Ritz-Carlton, so very appropriate, and so very delicious.

What a lovely afternoon we’ve had sitting by the sea, cooled by the breeze, sheltered by tropical palms, dining on fresh produce and sipping zippy cocktails. Thanks, Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui for a fab afternoon. We’ll be back again, soon.

Reasons to visit: beautiful seaside setting; the freshest of produce; don’t miss the fruit salad, tom yum pizza and a Pisco Punch.
