Michael Shin, General Manager, InterContinental Samui Baan Taling Ngam Resort

What do you do and how did you get into the industry?
I’m the General Manager of the InterContinental Samui Baan Taling Ngam Resort. I fell in love with the idea of living in a beautiful hotel and moving around the world so I chose Hotel Administration for my study at University and I have been doing this since 1998.

Share with us an interesting story from behind the scenes.
Last year, we had a wedding couple come to us asking if we can do a wedding party for the next day. Unfortunately, the resort that they were supposed to have a wedding canceled the event on them the day before. We had literally 20 hours to prepare for a 50-guest wedding ceremony and party – in the end we were able to arrange everything in the way the couple wanted.

What’s the best/ worst part of your job?
Best – to see young and passionate colleagues grow in their career
Worst – when I see a disappointing face from a guest

What’s your favourite experience at the InterContinental Samui Baan Taling Ngam Resort?
InterContinental is always about providing our guests true ‘In the Know’ experience where our guests can enjoy authentic local cultural experience. The Concierge team really goes above and beyond to ensure we can design the ‘Perfect Day’ for everyone.

What’s one of the funniest things you’ve seen behind the scenes?
I only wish I can share how much fun we have behind the scenes… even in the most pressured moments, the team always pull it off with joyful spirit and laughter.

The perfect day off would be…
A relaxing afternoon with family by the pool.

A day in the life of a GM is…

What do you do for fun?
Play with my children and golf.
