General Manager, Marjolaine de Coninck, Chateau Marquis D’Alesme

What do you do and how did you get into the industry?

I’m the General Manager and Winemaker of Château Marquis d’Alesme and Château Labégorce. After studying agronomics, oenology and economics, I worked abroad and in various properties in the Bordeaux area. I then met Mr. Hubert Perrodo and his family who have given me the opportunity to build an ambitious and exciting project.

Share with us an interesting story from behind the scenes.

I love wandering around Marquis d’Alesme and remembering all the little stories hidden behind each little detail of the buildings. One of them is the sculpted artichoke and engraved Triskelion in the gallery which are deeply linked with the Perrodo’s personal and intimate family story.

What’s the best/ most difficult part of your job?

The best part of my job is having the satisfaction of producing each year a new vintage with a new story. The most difficult and challenging part of my job is handling all the different aspects of the management: the vineyard, the cellar, the architectural project…

What’s your favourite meal/ drink?

Any dish as long as it’s with fresh truffles and served with a glass of Marquis d’Alesme.

What’s one of the craziest things you’ve seen behind the scenes?

Recently we have had the chance to celebrate Nathalie Perrodo’s (owner) birthday at Château Marquis d’Alesme. Friends from all around the world were gathered around a warm fire in Le Hameau. We had the crazy idea of roasting chickens in the fireplace in a nice cosy atmosphere and everyone seemed to enjoy the simplicity of the evening.

The perfect day off would be…

Relaxing in a deck chair in Italy, a lovely glass of wine in my hand looking at the sailing boats floating on the Mediterranean sea.

A day in the life of a general manager is…

A mix of Louboutin shoes and farmer boots.

What do you do for fun?

Host a charming dinner with my friends. Simple but tasty dishes prepared by a chef at home and served with my favourite wines.

What’s something you’d like guests to know about Château Marquis d’Alesme?

Marquis d’Alesme is a total experience that combines aesthetic and sensorial pleasures. It is a journey for the senses that reinvents an exquisite lifestyle. La Folie d’Alesme represents a voyage of discovery at the very heart of Margaux. Since the 18th century, the word “folie” (“folly”) has referred to a building whose location and odd or eccentric architectural features make it unique. A “folie” is designed to provide visitors with new aesthetic and sensorial experiences.

What’s your favourite (s) food and wine pairing?

Without a doubt truffles with wines from Margaux, Pomerol or white Burgundy wines.

What’s your view on the wine tourism scene in Margaux?

Marquis d’Alesme’s architectural project, at the very heart of Margaux, initiates a new dynamic based on the pleasure of tasting wine, eating delicious food and discovering exceptional places.

What’s in store for you in the upcoming months?

Marquis d’Alesme will be welcoming guests from September 5th 2016.
