Raisin’ The Roof, Healthy Eating in Damansara

Louise Miller & Monica Tindall

Our recent visit to Damansara Plaza’s latest arrival, Raisin’ The Roof saw a wet, grey and very miserable afternoon instantly transform as the rain clouds seemed to dissipate in the warmth of the ambience and the light and fresh colour scheme of this new eatery. Stepping through the door to this healthy cafe in only its tenth day of opening had us immersed in cheery turquoise and lemony yellow and surrounded by equally mood lifting grub.

Having spent much of our Yum Listing this year in quest of clean food, we are always delighted to hear of new additions to the growing list of options available to those who wish to eat a tasty meal without gaining a few pounds or clogging the arteries. With a mission statement of ‘making nutritious delicious’ Raisin’ The Roof clearly aims to fulfil this criteria.

Raisin’ The Roof – Cheery Design

We began with a Skinny Dip (RM14.90) made with coconut water, matcha, lemongrass and chia seeds. This super refreshing juice promised not only to burn fat, boost metabolism, hydrate and rejuvenate but also promote digestion and brain power – sold! We also tried one of Raisin’ The Roof’s moo-less milks, a range of delicious, flavoured non-dairy milks. We opted for Pistachio Rose (RM14.90) – and were delighted by the subtle floral notes. Fruity, refreshing and a little beer-like in flavour was the coconut and passionfruit Natural Probiotic Soda in total contrast with the creaminess of the Jackfruit Shake (RM14.90) whose distinctive jackfruit flavour was toned down with cashew nuts, almond milk and agave.

From the main menu, we sampled the vegan Sweet Potato & Black Bean Wrap (RM22.90) and the Pistachio Falafel Wrap (22.90). Our photo depicts half portion sizes of both of these dishes as we were eager to try as wide a range as possible. The middle-eastern inspired falafel wrap was Monica’s favourite and came accompanied with roasted beets, grated carrots, lettuce, all drizzled with mint yogurt and wrapped up in a wholemeal tortilla and partnered with a pot of yummy homemade hummus. Although I loved this too, I loved the mexican flavours of the Sweet Potato & Black Bean Wrap even more! Rocket leaves, tomatoes, guacamole accompanied the main ingredients along with a ridiculously tasty homemade chilli sauce for dipping and bringing tears (of pleasure) to your eyes in equal measure.

The Avocado Toast (RM18.90 for the vegan version, RM20.90 for addition of a sunny side up egg) featured Raisin’ The Roof’s ‘way better’ toast spread with lemon tahini, topped with avocado slices sweetened with tangy pomegranate molasses and adorned with pomegranate jewels. We went for the non-vegan version and really enjoyed the combination of the creamy avocado, fruity tang with the richness of the egg. This hearty dish would be very satisfying at any time of day.

We concluded our savoury sampling with the vegan and gluten free Brown Rice Sushi Bowl (RM17.90) the appearance of which announced great things. Varied and vibrant in colour it promised high taste factor and did not let us down. Like a bowl of deconstructed sushi, the  brown short grain rice was served with avocado, edamame, sauteed spinach pomegranate seeds, toasted seaweed and dressed with a delicious sweet soy dressing – we loved it!

The dessert menu suggests that by sampling their sweet treats, we’d be doing our lips a flavour and our hips a favour so who were we to argue? At Raisin’ the Roof there is an abundance of raw, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options all made with real food ingredients and unrefined sweeteners. The first of these to be placed before us was the Purple Pecan Pie (RM11.90) whose base of oats, crushed nuts and dates was topped by a scrumptious dense sweet potato mousse garnished with a generous sprinkling of nuts.

We tried a couple of the Bliss Balls (RM5 each) – the first was flavoured with cranberry and fig and the second, matcha espresso and both were delicious, sweet and sticky and would have made a great accompaniment to the artisan coffee on offer here.

Possibly saving the very best ‘til last, our hosts delivered two show stoppers to our table. The first of these was the Chocolate Lava Cake (RM15.90) which had a surprise twist – yes, it was gluten and dairy free like many of the cafe’s desserts but there was more: the molten chocolate that oozes from the centre when the dense cake is eased open was mixed with strawberry chia jam. What a delight this was! If strawberries don’t float your boat, opt for a peanut butter or matcha green tea filling and if this isn’t quite indulgent enough, add on a scoop of homemade ‘Nice’ cream (RM4).

The second of the sweet highlights was the Chocolate Orange Raw Cake (RM13.90). A nutty base followed by a sticky chocolatey and date tier was topped by the most sumptuous and intensely orange flavoured mousse made with cashew cream. This heavenly three layered cube put big smiles on our faces and had us diving in with our spoons until nothing remained.

A Little Bite of Heaven

Raisin’ The Roof is a great little place for guilt-free, vegetarian, vegan and healthy indulgence. In addition to all the tasty treats on the cafe’s menu, there are a number of nutritious homemade items available to purchase and take away such as the ranges of tasty granolas and flavoured nut butter creams.

Reasons to visit: a wide range of tasty vegetarian, vegan, gluten and dairy-free options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We particularly loved the wraps, Avocado Toast, Brown Rice Sushi Bowl, Chocolate Lava Cake and Chocolate Orange raw Cake.

Raisin’ The Roof is open from 8:00am – 6:30pm from Tuesday – Friday and from 9:00am – 6:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The cafe is closed on Mondays.

  1. Wraps look great, very colourful. We have health dining places here too, don’t think they have these, most probably vegetarian or organic Chinese cuisine. Never gone to any to check.

  2. Great to know that a chocolate lava cake can be a healthy indulgence here! 😉 Would love to try the brown rice sushi bowl.

  3. The decor looks beautiful! We’ve something similar to this in Central Market, but I definitely have not seen the purple pecan pie. I’m not a great fan of pecan, but it sure looks delectable!

  4. Like the look of the wraps. All the food looks very appetising..

  5. I would like to try the jackfruit smoothie. The wraps and salad tempts me. The avocado toast looks interesting. Have a beautiful weekend!
