best value bubbly brunches in KL

Sunday Brunch, Marble 8, Kuala Lumpur

Monica R. Clear and Monica Tindall
Some of my best dining memories are relaxed, lingering brunches with friends on a slow Sunday morning, perhaps after a late night of fun, where the coffee flows and the Sunday edition newspaper is passed around in between conversations about the night before, the week ahead, and news from around the world.  Time is suspended, as nobody has any place to be except in the moment.

Coffee
Of course, that was before any of us had families.
Marble 8, the fine-dining steakhouse restaurant on the edge of KLCC Park, known for its Australian Angus and Wagyu steaks, is offering a chance to re-capture the simple pleasure of brunch — as a family.
Marble 8
The Great Sunday Meat-Up is an event for adults and children held every Sunday from 11:00am – 3:00pm, where parents and non-parents can enjoy a leisurely brunch with quality food and alcohol, while the children are entertained through free play and outdoor activities, with a stunning view of Petronas Towers for all.

Wine and Views
With affordable prices at RM128++ per person or RM168++ per person with free flow Carlsberg beer, red and white wine (we were served South Africa’s Pearly Bay Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz and Chenin Blanc/Chardonnay) and San Feletto extra dry Prosecco, and RM78++ below 12 or free for below 10 children, this may be the best brunch deal in town.
Settling into the dimly lit dining room, you can slowly wake up with a coffee of your choice, and contemplate the generous salad and artisan bread buffet or egg station. The homemade tapenades of capsicum, sundried tomatoes and kalamata olives are delicious, as is the egg of choice, which can be served with beef salami, onions, mushrooms and cheese, if desired. These buffets are available throughout the meal for self-serve, as opposed to the appetizers, pasta & pizza, main courses, and side dishes, which are served at the table.

Egg Station
If you have little ones, your children, after admiring the dessert buffet with a large cotton candy machine that spins giant balls of brightly colored sugar-fluff (five different flavors to chose from!) onto a dinner plate, can head outside to the spacious garden, where a bouncy castle is ready for action and artsy, crafty activities to come.

Table Service
Appetizers began with a modest yet satisfying cream of parsnip soup.  Next came servings of comfort food fit for children and adults, of creamy pasta bowties, small squares of Margarita pizza, and baked eggplant parmagiana. I found the eggplant to be particularly tasty, but imagined my children would gobble each dish up with gusto.

The sampling of roasts arrived next, with a portion of slow-roasted Wagyu beef rib, leg of lamb, and chicken with herbs. While all the meats were good quality, the roasted chicken was especially savory, which was surprising for a steakhouse.  The meats were served with three sauces:  beef jus with red wine reduction, béarnaise, and mushroom ragout, which enhanced the beef rib and lamb.  The “catch of the day” was a slice of poached salmon, prepared perfectly.  Portion sizes were small, but the maître d’ assured us that patrons could order and enjoy second servings, as they desired, Chef to Table Buffet style.

Side dishes included Yorkshire pudding, pilaf rice, roasted potatoes, and sautéed vegetables – all of good quality and fresh ingredients.

Side Dishes
Because you don’t have to be a child to love sweets, I happily saved room for the dessert buffet, and thoroughly enjoyed the passion fruit and coconut truffle, and the chocolate pralines, all prepared in-house.  The panna cotta was also delightful, and the chocolate mousse rich and satisfying.  To clear your palette, finish with seasonal fruit bites.

Desserts
Marble 8’s Sunday Roast is a great way to start off a family (or non-family) Sunday.  Just be forewarned:  nap not included.
Reservations are recommended.  If you come with smaller children, you may want to ask for a table near the window, where you can watch your kids frolic.  Sun and play safety is monitored by staff outdoors, where spray fans will keep your children cool and refreshed, even if the day is hot and sunny.
Reasons to visit:  Family-friendly atmosphere, KLCC views, relaxed vibe, roast meats, cotton candy.

  1. Such lovely dishes! I'll order the Salmon, one of my very favorites.

  2. GREMLINS are afoot!!!!
This morning up came initially that spa place at Port Dickson again!
I went to great lengths with a reply to have "Oops – an error has occurred".
After three more attempts of exceedingly annoyed frustration ( unbecoming of me,
of course) I gave up and then up comes this – back in KL.

The food looks great – Salmon seems quite a favourite, but I am not really a salmon fan.
Maybe it has never been cooked correctly when I have on rare occasions eaten it??
I have really lost in this confusion my train of thought!
My fellow triplets of Cordobes fame would not be amused.
Trying to rain here – I think lawns and gardens after a most un-August like
month (so far) would welcome a reasonable drenching.
Cheers in confusion with this contraption of communication.
El Colin Cordobes, the middle one.

    • The Internet/ blog doesn't always behave – I too sometimes think there are gremlins in there 😉

Salmon – and for me fish in general – need to be cooked 'just right' to appreciate their flavour and texture. Cod seems particularly difficult to get right.

    • Salmon DOES need to be cooked properly. The best salmon I ever ate and I am not a salmon
lover was a "blue version" in Heidelberg in Germany! Yes – it was BLUE in colour!!!!
Maybe the Nectar River has strange qualities in the water system?????
The water didn't look too blue to me – ha ha.
But whatever the restaurant was called – all decked out in Teutonic armoury, it certainly
if you are in the area is worth a visit.
      Cheers
El Cordobes Colin, the middle one.
PS: How is junior Cordobes faring? Hopefully not racing around waving bloody capes
      at Malaysian cattle????

    • Please stop giving Junior Cordobes ideas! He needs no encouragement. 😉

  3. Very competitive price i must say, especially with the spread and spectacular view

  4. The salmon looks so mouthwatering and seared to perfection! Mmmm…. 🙂

  5. This looks like a sumptuous buffet…..and I like this chef to table style buffet 🙂

  6. What? RM128+++ without any lobster or oyster? He he… Guess it's bit too early for thise, right?
OK I'm just going to have steak. Ha ha… So typical Malaysian, right?!
    Value for money. 😉

  7. Yum, a lot of my favorites. I love the view of the towers and pretty park like area. Great post and review. Enjoy your day!

  8. Never tasted parsnip soup, must make some when I get home. The salmon once again is for me..

  9. Hi Monica, thanks for your recommendation – we tried out the brunch at Marble 8 yesterday and we loved it! A very family friendly place – the waiters entertained our baby throughout the lunch! We'll definitely go again once I have lost all the weight I have put on from yesterday's brunch 😉
