Tepian Laut at The Andaman, A Luxury Collection Resort Langkawi

Tepian Laut features beachside dining at its best. Wedged between the pool and stunning Datai Bay, water views are captured from every angle of the wooden deck. Our favourite time here is the close of the day when the fading sun bids its farewell in a golden extravaganza in the sky, and a glittery silver and deep purple on the ocean. It’s here we spend an afternoon delighting in international cuisine and a signature beverage or two.

I swear the ocean whispers to us, “Have a cocktail.” In this relaxed seaside setting we humour the sea and request two signatures. The Last Cocktail (RM26) is inspired by The Luxury Collection. A base of gin is topped up with a rosemary infusion, pear puree, lemon juice and sparkling wine. It’s likably on the sour side and perfect refreshment for the warm midday.

The Malaysian inspired, Radiant Maiden (RM26) starts with rum and adds in lime juice, kaffir lime-infused agave and Serrano chili peppers. While still fresh and sour, it has a slightly sweeter tinge to it and the kick of the chili is not felt until the very end, leaving a pleasant tingle on the roof of the mouth.

A pile of garden leaves covers the Insalata Caprese (RM26), and it’s not until we lift them up that we discover a vivid display of vine-ripened tomatoes, basil and super soft Bocconcini (farmed and cultured in Langkawi). A good pour of Balsamic covers the lettuce, but only a small amount is needed to dress these quality ingredients. Hubby is fine with the portioning of dressing, but if I were to order this salad again I’d ask for it on the side.

I couldn’t resist the idea of figs so ordered the Moroccan Eruca Salad (RM43). Rocket leaves entangle blue cheese, roasted walnuts and the dried fruit. A fabulous rainforest honey dressing lightly coats it all and hubby mimics my thoughts as he proclaims, “Delicious!”

Old habits die hard, demonstrates hubby with his Beef Burger (RM43) bid.  A minced Australian beef
patty (Australian supplied thankfully often means not factory farmed), beef bacon and cheese, come dripping with juice between a soft sesame bun. Steak fries are fat and crisp on the side with a couple of pickles, tomato slices and lettuce leaves.

Wholemeal Spaghetti (RM75) comes in an intensely rich Roma tomato coulis. Roasted cherry tomatoes and slices of plump Spanish green olives further augment the flavours. A golden pan-seared fillet of salmon surmounts the snarl of string pasta. A faint prickle of spice lingers on the lips after swallowing.

Caramel e Formaggio (RM26) brings toffee and cocoa nib cheese pave, salted caramel coulis and vanilla baby pears to the plate. “Mmmm, it’s like a cheesecake,” confirms hubby. Flavours are subtle and texture is smooth.

We’re intrigued by the local twist in Tiramisu Teh Tarik (RM26). Italian sponge cake is infused with tea from the Cameron Highlands, encased in creamy mascarpone, and drizzled with a the tarik sauce. While I don’t think I’m inclined to replace the original with this version, I do appreciate the whiff of local in the dessert.

Ocean breeze in our hair, tummies full, and feeling the heat of the tropics, we’re content and decide to sit a while longer to digest not only our food, but the magnificent scenery too.
