Takeaway Roast Turkey and Many Other Goodies to Make the Festive Season Extra Special – Kuala Lumpur Gold and Country Club

What to do this Christmas?

Go to a restaurant saving time and toil in the kitchen, but sharing the special celebration with random members of the public? Or… Stay at home for a more intimate experience, but tire brain and bone in the preparations?

I choose neither. I want a delicious meal prepared by a team of culinary gods and I want it in the comfort of my own home.

Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) gifts me with the answer to my desires this festive season, with an incredibly delicious take-away menu including all the provisions for a traditionally fabulous feast.

Executive Chef Arnold Kwok and his culinary team at KLGCC have put the fun back into Christmas by removing the kitchen slavery that oft surrounds it.

To celebrate the holidays with family and friends, we ordered a 6kg Roasted Australian Tom Turkey (RM300++) with all of the trimmings. They say it serves 8 – 10 people, but after our attack (6 hungry feasters) on the bird, we believe it might do closer to 12. I don’t believe I’ve ever had a turkey more perfectly cooked. A herbed skin kept the juices within and even the white meat was moist and tender. Succulent strips around the legs and wings were fought for and, the breast meat was eaten by itself by those health conscious bunnies in our group, but by others, luxuriously doused with the drippings.

It came with a wonderful Herb and Mushroom Stuffing on the side, making preservation and storage of leftovers much easier. (When saving turkey leftovers you should remove the stuffing first. KLGCC’s side option makes this a simple, effortless task.) Buttered Fresh Brussels Sprouts were a hit and quickly disappeared from the table, as did Cinnamon Candied Yams. We found the serving size perfect for six persons, but would recommend ordering double if you decided to serve 10 – 12 people. Cranberry Sauce and Turkey Gravy were provided in abundant portions and lovingly lapped up by all. Ten Soft Bread Rolls also came with the dish and, being budget conscious, hubby has calculated that it works out to be between RM30 – RM37.50++ per person (based on 8 – 10 diners). Now that’s what I call a Chrissy bargain!

There are other roast meats available too. Roasted Herb Crust Australian Black Angus Ribeye of Beef will set you back RM130++ per kilogram (minimum order of 3kg). A choice of Black Pepper or Mushroom sauces accompanies the dish. For the same price per kilogram, Rosemary Garlic Marinated Bone-in Australian Leg of Lamb is sided with either Black Pepper or Mint Sauces.

Side dishes, such as the ones that came with our turkey, can be purchased for RM20++ per 500grams. Extra sauces, cranberry, turkey gravy, black pepper, mushroom and mint come in 500ml portions at RM15++ each.

Can things get any better? Well, yes at KLGCC they can! Festive desserts too can be taken away for, what I believe are, very reasonable prices bearing in mind the quality put forth. You can find anything from a Christmas Log Cake, to Apple Mascarpone Cheesecake to a Spiced Pumpkin Pie!

Berry Chocolate Cheesecake (RM72++) and Maple Syrup Pecan Nut Pie (RM60++) peaked our interest. Both desserts were exquisitely decorated. The cheesecake, wrapped in chocolate ‘paper’, came topped with bright berries and rolls of chocolate. The dark base matched the edges in colour and the velvety textured filling was just the right amount of sweet and tang.

The pecan pie is high on the list as one of the best I’ve tasted. All too often this tart can be too dry, too mild in flavour or hold caramel that is too hard. This pie however was moist, yet firm with an adeptly set crust supporting luscious layers of roasted pecans. A line of berries broke the top and guests begged to have a sliver of this dream to take home.

Cakes are generally suitable for 10 or more people depending on the serving size. Ordering two cakes sounds a little decadent for one dinner, but at this time of year, with friends ‘dropping in,’ it’s nice to have leftovers providing something to offer with coffee or a glass of wine.

Perfect for the holiday season, this menu can be tried for the entire month of December, 2013. Do remember to book in advance for all takeaways (3 days for cakes and 5 for meats). Orders can be picked up between 11am and 7pm daily, including weekends and public holidays (!).  * 20% surcharge applies to non-members.
