Ploy’s Wine and Dine Feast with Stanley Estate

On top of Changkat Semantan, on the road to the new palace, sits the Work@Clearwater building. From this position a 180 Degree landscape of the city is viewed. A postcard perfect scene of the skyline is the outlook, with the twin towers and KL tower piercing the sky.

Ploy, Interior
Inside is the modernly designed Ploy. A clean space with shades of grey, black and brown and, geometric lines make up the dining area. A long bar invites thirst and an outside terrace offers vistas of the city. A private dining area is split-level and features a lounge area lined with low sofas and a cow hide rug. A glimmering ceiling of close to 5000 light bulbs, hung snugly together, sets the room alight. This would make a great place for a group get together. The chic contemporary setting is relatively fuss-free inviting the food to take the role of protagonist.

Private Room
It’s been the perception for a number of years now that wine is difficult to pair with Asian cuisine. Known for complex flavours and strong spices, the fullness of the food from this region usually dominates the taste bud receptors leaving little room for another layer of sensation. Recent years however have seen much more experimentation in matching wine to the complex flavours of the region with some exciting discoveries the result.
Our evening’s visit to Ploy saw the cuisine of Thailand and Japan and, the wine of New Zealand, come together forming an Asian fusion menu paired fittingly with a range of Stanley Estate wines from Marlborough.
Our senses were first aroused with an award winning Stanley Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2012.  Whiffs of passionfruit and mango on the nose and tropical fruit with a touch of lime on the palate, this wine is an easy drinking anytime, alone or with food, drop.

The appetizer, a Goat Cheese Puff with Wild Rocket and Truffle Oil came alongside the Stanley Estate Alabarino 2012.  Bite size cubes of layered flaky pastry supported the mild flavoured creamy cheese. A dome of red halved tomato crowned the top and, a sprig of green added colour.  The white wine, the first of the Spanish varietal planted in the area, was medium-dry with a mouthful of citrus and a suggestion of macadamia. A surprising trace of saline finished the palate. My dining companions scraped their plates for the last shavings of pastry, while hubby and I relished in the Iberian grape. The match was friendly rather than passionate. A more romantic partner might be some lightly pan fried scallops or juicy New Zealand mussels.

Spicy Angel Hair Corn Beef arrived next. The delicate strings of pasta were coated with olive oil and chilli and sprinkled with Brazilian corn beef leaving a smooth sensation in the mouth with whispers of spice and salt.  The Stanley Estate Pinot Gris 2012, made an amiable association.  Winter fruits dominated the roof of the mouth, which then developed into a medium length finish with a note of spice. This white was very popular amongst most guests verified by the number of top ups requested.

The main dish, Grilled Lemongrass Chicken with Onigiri Omelette Rice was washed down with Stanley Estate’s 2010 Pinot Noir.  The Pinot Noir and lemongrass chicken continued the light thread linking the courses in style.

Dessert was a winner before it even came out. How can you go wrong with Oreo Cheese Cake? The presentation only served to further heighten anticipation. A half macaron was planted in the upper layer of the rectangular prism banded with brown, beige and freckled ivory. A line of chocolate formed an artistic swirl on the white plate and three dots of colour led the eye to the main attraction. A chocolaty crumbly biscuit base held the creamy, gently sweet layers of whipped cheese. Serving size was perfectly small, leaving guests enjoying the finale, but not inducing guilt sentiments from an over indulgence. The crowd pleasing, Pinot Gris, made a return, adding double delight for the majority.

  1. I hear that some dishes has to go with different wine !

  2. The Oreo Cheesecake is definitely a triple threat there, would definitely love to have a slice. =)

I love the New Zealand and Aussie wines; for me, there is like a uniqueness to all their wines… or maybe I'm rather new to the winery world.

  3. I recognised the Pinot Noir at the colour of the wine but it is not my favourite grape.

    Greetings,
    Filip
