Langkawi offers a full gamut of accommodation from internationally branded five-star resorts to luxury villas and rainforest retreats to homestays in the rice paddies. Temple Tree Langkawi, however, furnishes a heritage stay unlike any other.

The grounds hold a group of antique dwellings from several states around Malaysia that have been relocated and lovingly preserved. Coming from various cultural backgrounds, Temple Tree Langkawi has buildings ranging from a Chinese farmhouse to a Malay nobleman’s home. Each residence is unique and considered a living museum.

Once belonging to wealthy town folk, the homes present an opportunity to step back in time. Our nights are spent in Chinese House 2, featuring a gorgeous wooden bathtub, four-poster bed, kitchen, second bedroom and a Mahjong room. Antique furniture adorns the rooms and the original wooden floors, walls and ceilings remain intact.

The verandah skirting the upper floor is a flawless viewing platform for countless bird and animal species. The trees are alive with activity early mornings and just before dusk. We observe squirrels, lizards and an incredible amount of avifauna. We hear frogs, crickets and a whole host of yet-to-be-identified wildlife.

Modern conveniences such as air-conditioning, television, electronic safe and mini-bar add comfort but the overall structure has been relatively unchanged. Tripods, a book for identifying local birds, sarongs, thongs and muscle balm addend a few more thoughtful touches. DVDs, books, magazines and board games can be borrowed from the front desk and the Internet was in the process of being upgraded during our visit with the goal of much speedier access.

Breakfast

A light continental breakfast is put in the fridge each evening for your convenience to consume whenever you wake. Generally, there’s yoghurt, cake, bread, juice and fruit. A selection of teas and coffee can be brewed in the French press too. Otherwise, Nam Restaurant opens at midday and continues operations throughout the day into the late evening. More on that menu here.

Facilities

One of the most eye-catching aspects of Temple Tree Langkawi is their two lap pools fringed with white-cushioned recliners and umbrellas. Surrounded by lush greenery, they propose peaceful spots to cool off or catch up on some reading. For anyone wanting a wider range of activity, the populated beach of Pantai Cenang is only a RM5 Grab car ride away.

The LASSie Program

You won’t get too far without noticing the permanent residents of the resort – the cats. Adopting Temple Tree as their home, you can find them lazing by the pool, stretched out on deck chairs, making eyes at the guests and charming their way into your lap or even your house if you allow. The owners of Temple Tree at Bon Ton work towards bettering the lives of animals on the island. As such, the wise cats know this is an animal-friendly retreat.

Self-funded, a shelter for cats and dogs has been set up under the LASSie program. Here they employ the island’s only veterinarian and propose an unconditional passion for stray animals. Animal lovers are encouraged to participate. Just ask the staff at the front desk how you can get involved.

Temple Tree Langkawi Review

Temple Tree Langkawi is a resort for those looking for something a little different. Liking animals is a pre-condition of entry as there is no escaping the creatures on the property, both domesticated and wild. The houses have a sense of serenity. There’s something quite beautiful about the old wooden homes with natural light and air streaming through. It’s a relaxed stay, easy for a casual family getaway.

Reasons to stay at Temple Tree Langkawi: a step back in time and a stay that gives guests a unique feel for local heritage and architecture; highly recommended for nature lovers.

  2. Very ethnic, this one… More for the tourists.

  3. you know how the phrase "it's a dog's life" usually has negative connotations? judging from how the felines frolic here at temple tree resort, i think "it's a cat's life" would be something i'd want for myself! 😀

  4. This place looks good for those who wants a quiet place for a getaway.

  5. This is such an interesting place, beautiful!!!

  6. Nice Pic & it seems a great option for all tourists.
