As you might guess from the name, Dragon Gate Dim Sum, sells,
well… dim sum! Taking our seat in the fastly filling corner lot we had a good feeling watching the heavy influx at only 11am. The large air conditioned space is simple but well illuminated with three walls of glass. Marble topped tables and carved wooden chairs add an oriental touch. Chef Cheah Kam Wah, the previous head of the dim sum department of the Marriott Hotel Putrajaya, is the chef leading the kitchen at Dragon Gate Dim Sum.

This Hong Kong style eatery hustles the typical prawn and pork bite size temptations but have extended their menu beyond your regular dim sum joint. The addition of many vegetable dishes sees a healthy slant infused into these bitty balls of yum. In turn they have a number of original plates not found elsewhere in the city. The Spinach Cheong Fun is one such creation. A spinach infused rice wrapping filled with firm prawns bathes in a soy sauce puddle. A scattering of crispy fried garlic yields a  contrast in texture
to the soft noodles.
Dragon Gate Dim Sum, Kota Damansara, Dataran Sunway, Chinese, Hong Kong, Breakfast, Lunch, restaurantThe appropriate accessory to a dim sum outing is tea, lots of it. According to my Chinese buddies, it supposedly helps to metabolize your meal. Dragon Gate has a decent offering of brews and we chose a refillable pot of Chrysanthemum Tea for RM3. Presented in a ceramic pot with matching cups it served us well.
Without making comment on all 15 (!) items we tried, I shall highlight the ones that stood out. Shanghai Xiao Long Bao must be eaten by first picking it up on a spoon, breaking the dumpling and allowing the soup to enter your mouth, then taking the solids, in hubby’s words, “It’s a killer.” The Black Sesame Bun caught my attention as the waitress told me that the soft fluffy bread like ball filled
with rich sesame paste is good for an illuminating complexion. The Shrimp Dumplings were excellent with a delicate wrapping and firm
centre. The Siew Mai had a perfect texture, was well seasoned and is the most ordered item on the menu. New fans of glutinous rice we couldn’t go past the Lotus Leaf packet. Its sticky glue like consistency and savoury fillings are yum. While hubby wasn’t a fan of the Herbal Chicken because of the amount of bone and skin, I enjoyed the herbal broth, packed with wolfberries and other goodies it would make a great soup for nursing the flu. Another dish I got all to myself was the Fried Radish Cake with X.O. Sauce. Soft soft yam
cubes with plentiful crunchy bean sprouts benefited from a mild kick with the spicy sauce. Being a fan of all things sweet and creamy, hubby mmmed and ahhhed over the Custard & Salted Egg Yolk Bun. Be sure to have a plate underneath when you break the bun to catch the sugary egg yolk as it oozes out. The Durian Pancake also tickled his tongue with fresh
slivers of fruit surrounded by a rich, intense cream and held together by a slender bandage.
Dragon Gate Dim Sum, Kota Damansara, Dataran Sunway, Chinese, Hong Kong, Breakfast, Lunch, restaurantService is fast and friendly. Once ordered, the baskets and plates came out hot
and flying. The waitstaff, even though run off their feet, still took the time to explain how to eat special dishes such as the Shanghai dumplings and showed which sauces go with each dish. Dragon Gate Dim Sum stands out for its variety of healthy
options. Many dumplings have extra vegetables and the high weekend turnover
means fresh ingredients and preparation.

  7. that looks like one of the best-prepared egg yolk custard buns i've ever seen! here's hoping they'll extend their hours to dinnertime someday, cos i'd love to bite into that bun! 😀

  8. I confess I have never really got the whole dim sum thing…but those durian pancakes look extraordinary. What texture! Rm3 for a refillable pot of tea is pretty reasonable..

  9. Oh, they have my favourite black sesame bun & "lau sar bao"!

  10. i'm literally drooling ogling at the photo of custard and salted egg yolk bun. i used to have cravings for these buns and my very sweet father sent me these custard and salted egg yolk buns all the way from sibu to kuching with love. the disastrous part was that. the salted egg yolks were not fresh. i ended up swallowing the whole bun instead of biting into it. the best part was that. i had to swallow not one, but 2 dozens of the buns.

  11. alamak is this place halal? those pics look so yummy and Kota Damansara is just near my area.. i'm looking for a halal place for good dim sum..
