The Red Beanbag, Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The Red Beanbag has been open for less than a week at Solaris Dutamas and it seems it has already won a following. I witnessed a steady stream of people come in and out of this cafe run by four Aussie educated locals wanting to bring a little of the Australian independent cafe scene to Malaysia. The clever architect in the team has done a nice job with the corner lot turning it into a breezy indoor outdoor environment overlooking The Square at Publika. All day breakfasts are served from 8:30am – 5pm daily with recommendations from the owners being: the Baked Eggs – eggs cracked into a baking dish of bratwurst and sundried tomatoes oven baked and served with crusty bread and; the Eggs Benedict – accompanied by asparagus, mushrooms and beef bacon. Pictured above is the Classic French Toast – coated in shaved almonds served with fruit and maple syrup. The reason this place makes The Yum List though is the coffee. Chantico beans are imported from Rubra artisan roasters from Western Australia. This particular blend has won seven medals at the Royal Sydney Show and is a combination of three Central & South American beans. Low acidity and medium body in medium to dark roast showcase what I love about Latin American beans. But it takes more than excellent beans to make a decent coffee. The barista plays a key role and in this case he could not be faulted. My flat white was a perfect balance of strong espresso and textured milk. The Red Beanbag is certainly worth a visit for a great cuppa and deserves a second look to further explore the breakfast menu.

  2. wow, we could have walked right past each other here and not known it! it's cool that you managed to photograph (and speak to) the amazingly young proprietors! i didn't notice them there, but they look like a cheerful, friendly bunch! interesting info on the coffee too; i wish i had known all that, so i could have appreciated my latte better! 😀

  3. Smitten – I love visiting Solaris Dutamas now – it seems every time I go there is something new.
Sean – glad you got to try the breakfasts and yes, the proprietors are young – I think that's what gives the place a good energy. 🙂

  4. Came with my friends to here too. is pricey and expecting some good australian food but they served some fusion western food which turn all my friends off. is very empty and quiet there. Food price is expensive and nothing fancy and taste normal only.

For coffee, better stick to illy or food court kopitiam. maybe barista skill problem or the beans type.

  5. Their pasta with seafood is good. I enjoyed eating it today with a cup of cappuccino 🙂

  6. Oh I was late yesterday..4pm + and no food!
Luckily managed to grab a Guinness Choc cake. Not bad!
